Oh kayleigh, I wish it were true that people who raise sheep for wool didn't kill lambs and older sheep, but the reality is that they do.

Shearing sheep of course doesn't kill them, but sheep who are older are slaughtered for meat and wool at half their natural lifespan, or are exported to countries in the Middle East where people slit the sheep's throats while the sheep are fully conscious.

I recommend you watch the following video to learn more about what people do to Australian sheep, including "mulesing," which I mentioned previously: they cut off chunks of flesh from the bottoms of fully conscious sheep receiving no anesthetic at all. Many of the older wool sheep are sent to the Middle East for slaughter there, where animal welfare laws often do not exist: Wool: Australia's Secret Shame

The Vegetarian Society of the UK provides good information about sheep in general and wool sheep:

Quote:

The Vegetarian Society - Information Sheet - sheep

The average breeding life of female sheep (ewe) is up to 15 years; however the vast majority are slaughtered by the age of 6 years. Between 15-25% of ewes are culled each year because of lameness, poor health or failing to lamb. Nearly 1/3 of British wool is from slaughtered sheep, this is referred to as skin wool.

Over 15.5 million sheep (15,539,900) were slaughtered in the UK in 2009 (16,696,900 were killed in 2008)(1). Stunning may often be ineffective and sheep may regain consciousness during bleeding-out or even before throat-slitting.

Live transport can be extremely distressing for the animals. Millions of sheep are exported each year from Australia to the Middle East. These animals have to endure overseas journeys sometimes lasting weeks at a time. Those intended for religious (ritual) slaughter are killed without pre-stunning when they reach their final destination.
More information on the slaughter of wool sheep:

Inside the Wool Industry

When sheep age and their wool production declines, they are sold for slaughter. This results in the cruel live export of 6.5 million sheep every year from Australia to the Middle East and North Africa, and nearly 800,000 sheep are exported from the U.K. for slaughter abroad.
Kayleigh, I would be interested to learn what you can find out from the sheep farmers who live near you, such as the age of their wool sheep when they slaughter them, and how many lambs they sell for slaughter. Also, do they punch the lambs' ears and cut off their tails without anesthetic, as is often standard procedure in the sheep industry?

When I watch the video about Australian wool sheep farming, the sight of what people do to the sheep results in a bigger gasp than is caused by the thought of wearing cotton instead of wool: Wool: Australia's Secret Shame

I do really love your efforts and your paragraphs on the subject I really do like seeing the opposing view. However I shan't watch the video, it would make me physically sick probably then I would still wear wool. I feel bad because I can watch these things be completely grossed out, be physically sick, yet still feel no guilt when eating meat and the like.

I'm an omnivore. If you're a vegetarian I admire your discipline. But I am not, although I am a VAGitarian.

???

I don't see how vegetarians are disciplined? I mean, I don't eat meat because I think it's ****ing disgusting, I'm never tempted to eat it, therefore it requires no discipline

Im referring to people who don't eat meat due to moral reasons but still enjoy meat.

lol what the **** are you even talking about? Why would someone who doesn't eat meat for moral reasons STILL ENJOY MEAT? If they still enjoyed it, they'd still be eating it! If it's morally wrong to them, it would not be enjoyable

I'm not completely a vegetarian, but I fail to see how being one is a discipline. It's more of a lifestyle choice based on one's personal morals and/or dietary needs.

I cut red meat out of my diet a few years ago because I think it's just gross. EW! I'm also Jewish so pork is out of the question as well. My parents aren't very religious but they grew up with the traditional Jewish custom of not eating pork, so they just continued with it. I think it's more for cultural reasons rather than religious ones. Although for a time I did have a taste for bacon.

So that leaves me with chicken and fish. I don't eat a lot of either, especially fish because it's very expensive! I also can't drink milk or have much of other dairy products due to a severe allergy. Except for ice cream - the real stuff, not that fake, soft-serve oil shit. For some reason I can eat it without any issues. I don't eat eggs by themselves either. I really only use eggs for baking purposes.

I guess I know what he meant.
I miss the taste sometimes.
Like if meat was made out of something that you didn't have to kill, I'd eat it.

Is that what you meant?

Exactly, yet you have the discipline to not eat it.
