Possibly the best song of all time. (Starcraft 2 Beta)

This thread is now about Starcraft.

Does anyone follow the Korean proscene/play starcraft?

ForcedOvermind 02-24-2010 10:44 PM

I was awfully close to actually paying $350 on an eBay auction for a key..

Luckily some blog my friend linked me to on Facebook was giving out some invites. I thought it'd just be another scam, but I got an invite mailed to me in a couple of hours. Go figure...

Anyway here's the blog with the invites:

starcraft2betainvites[.]blogspot[.]com

Just take away the brackets and paste it in your browser!

Good luck! Hope you guys get yours too!

no / yes (if 10 years ago counts).

to be perfectly honest i don't think SC2 is going to be a bad game, not in the least, but it will never live up to the hype nor will it replicate the sensation of playing the first one for the first time.

the original starcraft made waves for being the first RTS to incorporate 3 races, it brought innovation to the genre. at this point the laundry list of features for SC2 don't really point to anything really 'new'. it might be new to the series but after 13 years i would expect it, but it's not new to the genre.

i AM curious to see how they handle the campaign mode, early reports hinted at an actual novel way of handling the 'meta' game for lack of better terms. at this point it's the only possible 'new' feature being brought to the table that i'm seeing.

As for living up to the hype, teamliquid.net have already approved the beta as awesome. And they're the ones blizzard was hoping to impress.

fair enough i guess, it's nice that Blizzard is paying attention to what a small and vocal minority of the gaming public has to say, the rest of us have played other games in the 12 years since Starcraft came out. my thing is a desire for something new, not just something that looks new.

the RTS genre has come a long way since the last time Blizzard released the last expansion for Warcraft 3 (back in 2003).

although it was freaking awesome to dust it off a few weeks ago to start playing through the campaign again hehe. basically, there was a much smaller hill to climb and become king of when Starcraft came out; in order - Dune 2, Warcraft, Command and Conquer, Warcraft 2, and Total Annihilation, those weren't tops, that was the entirety of the genre at the time.

i don't doubt they'll be on top again when SC2 releases, but they'll be a much smaller king on a much bigger hill.

in retrospect i goofed earlier as well. Starcraft wasn't the first title to have 3 races, the original RTS - Dune 2 had three races. although they were all 'human' and relatively similar, but still.

Comus 02-25-2010 07:22 PM

The thing about Starcraft is that it had three unique races that were balanced. At the end of the day teamliquid are the people that still play starcraft and follow the foreign and the proscene. You need to make sure the core community are pleased, because they're the ones that know what is needed for a competitive game.

The first thing blizzard wants to do is please the Koreans, after all there's still a televised proscene there. It's not a graphics boost either, it's very different. I'm not going to defend the game until I've played it, just the community seems happy so far.

Also, there's no doubting that Starcraft is still the benchmark for comparing new RTS games.

I still maintain that the more races the better, so for me WC3:FT was a monster. Still, SC was amazing though I always thought the Protess Aircrafts were overpowered.

mr dave 02-26-2010 12:32 AM

@Comus - i've never really considered the game as a competitive product, i see the point though.

as for the changes the main ones i've read that sound most appealing are the way upgrades and new vehicles are unlocked and the chronological linearity of the campaign. not really interested in the multiplayer yet. still loving 'the last stand' in dawn of war2. :bringit:

i usually played terran so i'd just EMP and send in the wraiths and laugh. hehehe

Comus 02-26-2010 05:08 PM

Carriers are strong, but only effective against terran, and even then if you let a protoss get to late game on 3-4 bases without stopping them then you deserve to lose.

TheBig3 02-26-2010 07:01 PM

See if I was terran I would only shutdown Protoss advances with a consistent nuke-strike.

In many ways I gave the Neo-Cons their political platform.
