What is happening with MB?

This is pretty much the best forum I've ever posted on (I've posted on like 3/4, so not a huge amount to compare to) and I personally can't see any decay in the quality of it at the minute, maybe it's because I joined bang in the middle of it declining or something, I don't know. I do think people are overreacting and jumping the gun slightly just because it's gone "quiet" lately for whatever reason (I'd say this forum at what is considered its quietest is busier than the majority of other forums) but it's bound to happen at some point, what with people having college/university/school work deadlines etc. there's gonna be times where this place is tumbleweed central, but I dont think it's a symbol of how this place is gonna look in a year or so. I don't even know what I'm typing any more because I've barely slept and have probably just repeated what every other tom, **** and harry has posted previously.

Also, re: the shouty, I've never seen any hostility in there (apart from when someone gives their two cents on Punk and Paloma disagrees

(and also towards dirty/booboo)). I don't post lots because I don't have much to say so I mostly stick to the shoutbox as the selection of regulars are great, so yeah I don't think eradicating it will do any good.

I get the idea that some people have a problem with the forum turning into a gathering of music freaks, rather than an informative forum.
Altough I see their point, social happenings are usually what bonds people on a forum.
It's pretty hard to keep it informative and informal at the same time.
And I do agree the informal side tends to rule a bit, here.

No, I think they see it as a gathering of freaks, and unfortunately music has little to do with it.

MoonlitSunshine makes the valid point that the number of posts here shows how alive MB is and how many concerned members it has. I`m just a newbie, but it looks healthy enough to me.

I`m not worried about funny threads like "One word" : it`s there for people who want to try it. If not, isn`t there a survival-of-the-fittest process at work that sends unpopular threads to the bottom of the deck ?

As tore says, individual members could post more constructive threads to encourage discussion, which is the way a forum works, no ? The quality of the posts is entirely in the hands of the members. His Prog and Fusion Album Club, for instance, is an excellent format for discussion, with just enough structure to ensure that everyone is on the same page. I`m surprised it`s the only one in MB.

To right-track, who says he has a thankless job, jackhammer and all the other mods, I`d like to say thank you : your efforts may not be commented on, but that doesn`t mean they are not appreciated.
Maybe we should open a "Hug a Mod" thread to counterbalance all the flak that I saw in the "Hate Mail" thread.

I agree Lisnaholic, that's a fun idea.

I think the biggest thing we can all do to improve the quality of the forum is remember that it's not a place for chat. And inasmuch the fact that it's a place for discussion and debate, it's also essentially living literature for those on the outside. Remember that you don't have to join a forum to read one, and being the first Google Result for 'music forum' and other music related topics is a big responsibility. Our posts should be good reads for others, and they should reach some conclusions and inform the members and non members alike about deep musical topics.

The lounge is the "catch" for anything else, and what doesn't get caught there - that goes to the shoutbox.

So, instead of posting a one-liner or constantly trying to be funny (i'm not saying you shouldn't be yourself, I'm just saying be aware of how much you do it) really approach the discussions as a writer or an opinionated party. Ask yourself before each post, "will this help the topic or am I just posting this for the lulz?"

And MB is still great, by the way
