To be honest I don't excuse littering, but I understand how annoying carrying butts are until you find a bin or a toilet. I tried to do that today once, sorta burnt my hand after scraping it to put it out so I ended up holding it upright and felt like an idiot so couldn't be bothered and flicked it.
Also there are convenient ashtray tins you could take anywhere with you. So I'll try that...

The smell is gonna be there yes, but so does your hands and breath, although it may not linger as long as a stripped butt. I do this all the time, and as soon as I see a proper receptacle, I dump what ever butts I've accumulated into it. As far as burning yourself, I keep forgetting others may not have calloused hands like I do. You could always scrape it on the ground or on the side of a wall as an alternative. Grass even works.
I do like the ashtray tin idea.
