I know, thats why I was asking what is something that can be used in its place that is still polite, but alot less formal. I dont think there is a polite, informal way of addressing a woman whose name you dont know!

I would just go with Miss, its always worked for me. You could always walk up and introduce yourself and than you would know the persons name. Kids these days.

Even I always hold doors open for people, what pisses me off is 12 or so people going through whilst I still stand there like a mug holding it, and none of the bastards even say thank you to me. Pisses me right off. As for slating accents, it's repulsive stop it. I feel when I'm out of the country nobody can understand me, texans just get it more of the time. I know how they feel so even I don't like it.

What I do if I see a group that I think will take advantage of the fact I'm holding a door open is let go of the door as one person has made their way through, so that anyone behind them has to catch the door themselves.

Yeah but that's very impolite. I've done it in extreme cases but I hated it.

Is it more impolite than the person behind not taking control of the door to let you on your way?
