The first time I drowned I was on a sinking ship. The initial collision was very loud almost knocked me out of my bunk. I immediately got up to see what was happening. Water was up to my knees by the time my feet hit the floor. I decided to just go back to sleep. So yeah, they probably died peacefully in their sleep.

Or the initial collision killed but nah too unrealistic.
