I remember when I was 12 or 13 and was involuntarily subjected to being around a redneck for a few minutes. This was when rednecks had short hair and were easier to spot. After a minute or so of unsolicited ranting from him about how much he hated blacks and gays, i asked him what kind of music he liked. His attitude softened considerably. He mentioned a couple of country acts,a rock band, and then, without any sense of irony, he added "...and I like Sly." Later on, I thought that if Sly could get through to even an idiot like him, maybe music was capable of bringing the world together. I eventually lost my youthful naivete, but it was a nice thought. |

I heard he had some type of dementia a few months ago. I figured I'd be hearing of him passing away sometime soon. One of the most memorable shows I've ever seen, was when he did the first 'Pet Sounds' tour back in the early 2000's. It was one of those very rare times when the band and the music were so good that it made me feel like I was having some sort of out-of-body experience where the music just picks you up and you feel like you're floating. And I was completely sober at the time. R.I.P. to one of the greats. |

I was fortunate enough a few years ago to see Brian with his solo band, which included Al Jardine and Blondie Chaplin (who sang "Sail On Sailor", my favorite Beach Boys song), with The Zombies (4 out or 5 original members!) there as co-headliners. Brian's encore was the following song, with him seated at the piano and the band gathered around him:
