The New MusicBanter Chatroom Thread!

Connecting to the #musicbanter IRC chatroom is simple!

Click here to open a MusicBanter Webchat in your Browser!

Those who want to connect with their own IRC client instead of the browser client can read the mIRC Guide section below.

Basic commands

There are some commands you can use for changing your nick, creating new channels or private chats with other users and so on. On IRC, all commands are done by the syntax /command. In other words, you always precede a command with a /. Here are just a few of the most basic commands. Just write them into the text box like you do when you chat and press enter.
  • /join #channelname ~ (f.ex /join #musicbanter) ~ Joins a channel (chatroom). You can use this to create new, private channels and invite people to them.
  • /part ~ Leaves the channel you're currently looking at
  • /nick newnickhere ~ (f.ex /nick mrpotato) ~ Gives you a new nickname
  • /query username ~ (f.ex /query tore) ~ Opens a private chat with another user
  • /whois username ~ (f.ex /whois tore) ~ Gives some info about that user

When using the mb.politeforce.com browser client, notice that different chats like private chats and different channels come up as different tabs in the top of the chat client.

mIRC Guide

Because the channel is on an IRC (Internet Relay Chat) server, there are a multitude of ways one can connect to it. All you need is an IRC client and there are many of those out there, like irssi (for linux/unix), trillian (looks more like MSN) or mIRC. All the information you need to connect to the musicbanter chatroom with any IRC client is this :
  • Server : irc.rizon.net
  • Port : 6667
  • Channel : #musicbanter

Because mIRC is free and popular for Windows-users, the rest of this guide will show you how to connect to the chatroom using that client.

Step 1 : Get mIRC and start it up!

Downloading and installing the program is easy. Just navigate to this site :
http://www.mirc.com
Click the big, green "Download mIRC" button. Save the file somewhere on your computer. Run the file after downloading to start the installer. Install the program. Run it.

When you start the program, you'll see a box that says it's an evaluation version and you have 30 days. Don't worry, you can use it for free forever, it's just trying to trick you. Wait until you can click continue. Then you'll see a box eagerly awaiting for you to fill it with some information.

Step 2 : Enter your info!

Fill your info into the box. It's really not that important what you write, but here are some basic info.
  • Full Name : It doesn't matter what you write here
  • Email address : not.here.either@I.think
  • Nickname : This is the name you will go by on the IRC. Your "nick" or "handle"!
  • Alternative : This is an alternative nick in case the one you want is already taken.

Step 3 : Find the right server and connect to it!

In the Category list on the left in the box, you should see "server" almost on the very top. Click it! It looks like this :

http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/2826/89993325.png

You'll see an alphabetical list over available IRC networks. Scroll down the list until you find the one called Rizon. Double click it, mark the Random server that came up and then click the select to the right. This will take you back to the previous window where you entered your information. It has a connect button in the middle of it. Click connect! Wait patiently a few seconds and you should get connected to a rizon server.

( PS! If nothing happens, check the connect button in the top left corner. If it looks like it does in this picture, you need to click it. If you are connecting or connected, the lightning icon will be broken, meaning you'll disconnect from the server if you click it

http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/4447/39037953.png )

Step 4 : Join the #musicbanter chatroom!

When you've connected, you will get a box up asking you what channel you want to join. Just write #musicbanter in the box, then click join. In other words, do like in this picture.

http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/9022/67367881.png

.. And there you are :) Check the IRC basic commands at the top to do stuff like changing your nickname and joining new channels.

Guybrush 04-11-2011 11:57 PM

Who banned you guys?

Key 04-11-2011 11:59 PM

Not sure. I don't think there were any mods there at the time. We were constantly changing our names to act as other people, and suddenly we just got banned.

Then you probably got a server ban. Let's hope it was temporary. There are some rules on the server as there is on any server.

You may have accidentally broken a no flooding rule? Flooding is a way of disconnecting other users and crashing servers. It's done by sending simply a lot of data to the IRC server, such as by pasting nonsense lines very fast or changing your nick a lot very fast. It was effective back in the days when internet connections were ****, but it's generally not as effective nowadays. Still, IRC servers tend to be a bit old school about flooding rules.

Hopefully, any server ban is just temporary. At least I can connect just fine with my browser client.

Key 04-12-2011 12:13 AM

Oh yeah, it was like a 30 minute ban. I've been able to get in all night just fine. That's good to know though, guess we'll have to die down on the nick changing, as funny as it is.

This is likely what happened .. Maybe I should make a disclaimer in the first post asking people not to spam nick changes :p:

Scarlett O'Hara 04-12-2011 05:23 AM

This is going to take off. Keep it bookmarked people! Use your tabs and pads wisely.

 I just banned myself whoops!

Howard the Duck 04-12-2011 05:51 AM

what's mIRC?

Scarlett O'Hara 04-12-2011 06:21 AM

Dude just go this site: http://mb.politeforce.com/

Guybrush 04-12-2011 10:30 AM

Activity has been booming and the chatroom is a bigger success this time around than ever :) Now we've also added a trivia game channel for those who like that sort of stuff.

To join it, just type "/join #mbtrivia" in the chat. On that channel, Trivia is a bot which runs trivia games. Typing ".help trivia" in that channel gives you the following helpful info :

Quote:

.topten/.tt - lists top ten players.
.rank [nick] - shows yours or given nicks current rank.
.next - skips question.
.themes - lists available question themes.
.theme set <name> - changes current question theme (must be channel founder).

Have fun with it!

Guybrush 04-12-2011 01:31 PM

I have no wish myself to moderate the activity in the channel, but moderators can of course if they want to. I'll give MB moderators auto-op on the channel (basically moderator status), but before I do that, mods should register their nicknames with nickserv.

When logged into the chatroom, just write :

Code:

/msg nickserv REGISTER <password> <email>
Change <password> and <email> for whatever works for you. You will get an email sent to the address you specified with further instructions as how to complete your registration. When that's done, I can add you to the channel's auto-op list! When logging on, to let nickserv know it's really you who is using your nick, just write "/msg nickserv IDENTIFY <password".

Key 04-12-2011 01:50 PM

^Done.

Dirty 04-12-2011 07:18 PM

so basically anyone and everyone can be a mod in the new chat?

anyone else find it kinda funny it's powered or whatever by lolipower.org?

I like the new chat when it isn't over run by retardation in the form of everyone switching usernames every 5 seconds. Which has been rare these past 2 days. But I like not having a swear filter and seeing who all is at least viewing the chat.

I thought this was a new thread about the old chat. No?

Guybrush 04-12-2011 11:39 PM

It is the old chat. What's new is just the browser client I've set up which makes people get on more easily, but anyone following the guidelines from the old guide will meet up with the guys using the browser client advertised in this thread. I didn't like the way the old thread was made, nor the fact that it had been modified to advertise an AIM chat (I never use AIM myself), so I made a new thread.

I don't intend to let anyone be a moderator in there, but I will of course let anyone who's a moderator here moderate the IRC channel (Janszoon, Conan, Freebase Dali, Pedestrian etc). There's been some impersonation going on, people pretending to be other people. Maybe there could be a rule against that, but as mentioned, I'm not too keen on moderating behaviour myself.

Scarlett O'Hara 04-13-2011 02:33 AM

Ahem...yes I think maybe it's a good idea that people don't impersonate others...I am very guilty of it.

Howard the Duck 04-13-2011 02:35 AM

it was a heckuva fun this morning

jackhammer 04-15-2011 06:20 PM

In there now. Dead as corduroy trousers :(

Scarlett O'Hara 04-15-2011 06:24 PM

The last day it's been pretty dead. I managed to find some people chatting last night.

Maybe people should announce when they are in to keep the juices flowing.

I can see there was continous chatting going on from about 2:30 AM until about 9:30. Now it's dead again, though!
