What can always get you into the creative mood (song, film, people, etc.)?
There is always that one thing that you can't help but to become inspired, and begin the creative process (any form of "art" or expression)......what is yours?

Creative in what sense? Musical, or broader than that?
I would like to relocate this thread to the Lounge, because it's a pretty broad topic encompassing more than music. |
You are very right. My apologies for not being specific.

To answer the question at hand, I'm inspired to write and create artwork primarily by exposing myself to artwork, writing, and music that I thoroughly enjoy. That's fairly obvious and probably applies to most, but I am also deeply inspired (not just in terms of art, but in my attitude and lifestyle) by travel and culture.

Thats really awesome. It just goes to show how necessary it is to be aware of one's own surroundings in order to help shape and adapt them to those things to come. Not to mention what comes forth from it.
|
I'm mainly inspired by my subconscious and my dreams, as well as pretty much anything intangible (I really enjoy pictures and music that are blurry or out of focus) or mysterious/dark (I've always been intensely fascinated by ghosts and goblins and witches and things of the sort). I really like being in places that provoke strong feelings for one reason or another. Dark cities almost always evoke a lot of fantastic imagery for me. I feel comforted by all the lights, and yet I feel apprehensive about the dark pockets where no one seems to be. I've always preferred the dark; everything is more interesting at night time.

There's something about being alone in a foreign city that brings out the best in me.
|
Those are the best kind. It's like food for the brain! There's just so many new things to look at and experience.
Well, not a true "foreign" city, as in outside of the U.S. (as I've never been to one), but just one I've never been to. I imagine one that was outside of the country would be even more intense to experience. |
I've found that I don't enjoy North American cities very much. The culture and history is all too recent and homogeneous to really inspire me.
|
Yeah exactly. I was in a city in Delaware that had been around since the beginning (1600s), and that was just unbelievable to me. On the other side of the coin, I do still enjoy very urban places as well. I enjoy almost all cities, unless they have nothing to offer. Like if they have some history, but aren't all that old (or even if they are old, and you just couldn't tell because they don't embrace it). Or are urban, but not big or sprawling enough to be all that interesting or dramatic. Going to NYC was an absolute blast for me. I can't wait until I go back!

You seem a prime candidate for travel addiction. Traveling solo is something I firmly believe everyone should do at least once.

I seek inspiration/getting in a creative mood by nature, books, playing bass and interactions I have with people. Enviorenment is kind of a big deal to, it can go towards something negative or positive depending on my mood. Whenever the pen goes to pad or hands to keyboard though I have trouble organizing my thoughts.

I do notice that it tends to happen when I'm not anywhere close to a place where I can write down these ideas so I have to fight and force myself to remember them by the time I get home or to a place where I can jot down these new ideas before they are lost forever. |
My personal experiences inspire a lot of the music that I make and the songs that I write, especially when it comes to lyrics. My moods also affect that, obviously. And interestingly enough, the seasons. All winter long I was writing sad, depressing songs. But now that summer is starting, I'm feeling more and more in need to write bouncy, happy songs. Anyone else have a similar experience?

I become creative through music mainly. I like to write while pumping some sick beats.

^ Heh, to a certain extent!
Sometimes, that just makes me what to concoct extremely creative food items. Not necessarily the kind of creativity I'm usually most desiring of unleashing. My creativity being sparked often has a lot to with my surroundings. When I'm all by myself really late at night, I find that's more conducive to working than the daytime. Also, if I'm horribly blocked, I often need to go somewhere new. I people watch occasionally, finding little snippets of dialogue I gather from people near who are passing by, and sometimes those can spark an entire song or two; sometimes, that can spark the entire premise for a play. I also find that when I'm writing songs or plays, I can't be in a perfectly clean space. I need a little bit of chaos. There have actually been times when the room I was in was "too clean" for me to be able to write anything productive, so I've gone into my closet and thrown clothes in the floor just so there was a bit less structure. If I'm writing something like an essay, though, I find that writing it when very awake, during daytime, in a comfortable and well-lit room is the best. Any creative endeavors, and I really need things to be in disarray or my writing feels too sterile. |
I'm naturally creative, so I don't need any preparation.

Viewing things in a different angle, such as: hanging off the side of bed upside down. Standing on kitchen counters. Laying on the bathroom floor (in the pitch black is optional).

eating something thick, say a burger, gives me that sense of creativeness.
in fact, when i was still a student, i always put something in my mouth, say a food, while i study. it helps my memory and my learning skills. |

are you talking about something like a Muse?
i don't really need a trigger or anything to be creative, once an idea comes into my head, I just write it down for a song lyric or insert it into the novel I'm writing |

I'm always in the creative mood. But one of the biggest things I get ideas from is dreams. If not dreams, then pretty much anything that affects the senses. Like fragrances, food, or music.
