Great thread!

I was wondering what people think of IDM music that isn't Aphex Twin. Seems a lot of people sort of relate the two together, but never go into discovering anything beyond him, or your standard stuff that most people relate to the genre.

Also, would you consider Venetian Snares to be in the IDM category, even though it's technically Breakcore?

Eh, I've never really understood why it's called IDM in the first place... What makes it more "intelligent" than other types of dance music? In fact... why the hell is mainstream alternative rock called "alternative rock" when it's not an alternative to mainstream because it is mainstream.

That's been a point of debate about IDM. Personally, it just sticks with me as a name that sort of encompasses experimental electronic music, regardless of its actual relevance, simply because it has been used so much for so long.
But as a general background, I've always looked at it as a different approach to "dance" music, where ordinary "dance" music relies on no more thought than being able to feel the rhythm and move to it, whereas "Intelligent" dance music is more exploratory and thinking, rather than rote driven movement.

As for your other point, never knew the reason behind "alternative", to be honest.

Yeah, I'd also like to know what IDM is. Aphex Twin just sounds like "electronic music" to me. Is it the break beats? Is Hrvatski IDM?

I think alternative rock is just an alternative to cock rock.

I don't think I'd really consider Venetian Snares IDM, but if you want some good IDM I'd say look not further that Kid 606.

Well, when alternative rock arose in the 1980s, it was (originally) an alternative to all the synth-poppy/new wave music that was being released at the time. So, therefore, it's name made sense (at that point).

Also, I've always pondered about the idea that The Velvet Underground creating alternative rock in the 60s (twenty years before it technically came about). What do you guys think of this theory?

Yea, being that VS is technically breakcore, I'd say the IDM tag that usually comes with VS is because of the way people use IDM as a relation to "wonkier" (for lack of a better term) styles of electronic.

Honestly, it could be argued that the same effect is at work when people term electronic music as "Techno", although with perhaps slightly less ignorance driving the tendency.

Freebase, tell me about my favorite IDM guy, "Son of the Electric Ghost". Also known as Bil Bless.

I'm not too knowledgeable about Alternative or its roots. I always sorta related it to Grunge, and most of the bands that came out in the mainstream during the '90s, as that's around the time I really had more radio influence, having lived in a pretty restrictively religious family.
