Any decently-made shirt can last up to thirty years. The way I see it, manufacturers and their allies use the idea of fashion to trick gullible people into buying more shirts than they really need. The main goal of the fashion industry is to make unnecessary consumption look like it`s fun, or smart. In fact, unnecessary consumption, as this woman makes clear, damages not only your pocket, but the planet too.

So no surprises that I sympathize most with Mrd00d and Vangelica in this thread, and mainly have, in my wardrobe, carefully selected second-hand clothes. Here are a couple of fashion does-and don`ts that I apply to myself. ( What other people choose to wear is their responsibility, so I try not to waste any energy "hating" other people`s clothes - in fact, their bad choices help you to look good in comparison, so you should thank them !)

- don`t wear "talking t-shirts" or become a walking advertisement by having some brand emblazoned on your clothes.
- if you`re going out, don`t wear something that will embarrass your companions. If that means dressing up, then so be it.
- it`s better to be discreet than ostentatious.
- Fads Are Fatal ; avoid things that, suddenly, "everyone is wearing"

Cool pics of tore and jackhammer, btw ! Last time I visited London, this is what the well-dressed man was wearing :-

As much as I love a shirt, I'm not going to own it for 30yrs. I'd be dressed like a filthy bit of mutton at 50 haha.

^ The trick is to have at least two shirts, so you don`t have to wear the same one every day for thirty years, and if you`re squeamish, you can always wash them every couple of years too.

FETCHER. 02-21-2012 03:37 PM

 only if I squeamish right? :(
