These kind of of shoes (MALE)

These shoes scream out "i dont care" in a bad way. If you wear these kinds of shoes your a symbol of independence in a negative sense. All the other proclaimed "independent" people would not be caught dead in these shoes, trust me. No, those people are wearing thick rimmed glasses and some dirty vans. This specific type of independence is the result of being un-susceptible to advertising, peer pressure or social norms. Your saying, "not only am i not cool, I have not the faintest idea of what cool would be, nor have I ever associated with anyone cool. Shoes to me are merely a function".

^The irony for me in your dislike of men's wearing Asics running shoes is that someone who is unsusceptible to advertising, peer pressure, or social norms and views shoes as a function is exactly the sort of person I think is coolest! :)
Running shoes are good for your feet, don't have leather, breathe well, and are comfortable. They also allow sprints when necessary, in case the urge or need to run overcomes the wearer.
The one negative I see in Asics gels is that they suggest the person is willing to pay $80 for shoes when perhaps a $14 pair of Target Prospirits (MY favorite brand!) would suffice, especially since many people don't actually jog or run. Being thrifty is cool.
My idea of cool:
$14 Prospirit running shoes, intended for men, but good for women, too! ;)

I wear shoes like that. Why? Because that's what they gave me when I went to the Mission to get free shoes when my last pair fell apart. Some people are too poor to care about fashion. You're right. I'm not cool, I've never been cool, and I've never associated with anyone cool. But, I couldn't care less about 'cool'. What's wrong with being unsusceptible to advertising, peer pressure, or social norms? I say screw all of that. And I guess that's your point. But what's wrong with that? For a second I thought surely you must be facetious or sarcastic, but when finished reading I ... think you really feel that way. I don't get advertised to anyway as I don't watch TV or read magazines. I only have three friends in the world and we're all fairly similar in this regard. And social norms - I poop on those. Even if I had money, I wouldn't jump on the hipster "don't care" look because I think they look stupid. Not as stupid as Tap-Out but pretty lame. But I certainly can not be bothered with fashion in the least.

YOU, Mrd00d, epitomize cool. You're not a follower, you think for yourself, and you don't waste money on frivolous stuff because you have more important things to care about and uses for your money.
However, just so you know, I've always thought Asics running shoes are cool, so I was surprised to read the OP thinks otherwise. People may be looking at you and your shoes and thinking, "Cool!" even though that wasn't your intention when wearing them! :)
