Question for plank and gb: How in the hell did y'all get to the point where you could play that fast? I'm not even sure the technique behind it. Just a bunch of rapid hammer-ons and pull-offs?

Practice.

I use a combination of hammer-ons, pull-offs, and two handed tapping. The thing is, is that it's hard to explain "When" to use what. Some of what I can do with H-O's and P-O's can be done with legato (fast alternating) picking, it's just easier to ring the notes out with the fretting hand. For tapping, some of it can be done using picking techniques, and then again some of it is impossible with out using two hands. It really boils down to what you are comfortable with, a lot of practice, and the ability to use the guitar as an extension of yourself.

Here's a good example that uses all the above techinques. It's a bit sloppy (just me warming up), but I think it illustrates quite a few styles of picking:
