the definition of "troll" escapes me. yes. i'm serious.
i'm sure there are a good number of people around here who have at least begun to acknowledge my childlike ignorance when it comes to internet etiquette. if not, awesome. but if so, please forgive me. music banter is the only forum that i've ever been on, and it's where i learn everything about forums.
anyway. as of about 15 minutes ago, i've been accused of trolling twice. for the first person who ever called me out on it (and not the second, because i don't feel the need to explain myself to an idiot), i would like to say that it confused me because i (perhaps ignorantly) look at the structure of a forum as a conversational framework. as in, back and forth. sometimes there are many people, and sometimes there are few. sometimes it's lighthearted and sometimes not so much. i guess what escapes me about the definition of what trolling is stems from the fact that i never say things to incite anger. i say what i say to get my point across, and as is the nature of conversation, rivulets and streams often occur outside the main body, and i find myself checking in on and adding to an ongoing conversation. so i suppose my question is: is it a faux pas to look at forums like this? is it expected of members to have perfectly worked out the substance and explanation of their point in an effort to make a single, contributory post? seriously. i have no idea. any and all thoughts please. :) |
"Trolling" is the act of making statements with the intent of disturbing/annoying/getting-a-rise-out-of others.
|
I feel like this thread is a backwards troll, where you're saying you don't know what a troll is even though you do & then when you're called out for it you'll deny it & cry, but I hope I'm wrong since Internet trolling is a pathetic thing to do

lol@ how you guys are attempting to turn this around on me, I guess this place is filled w/ trolls like you guys
How can an internet user who regularly posts on a forum make a thread saying he/she doesn't know what trolling is, it is obvious he's trolling & it's pathetic but believe what you want. my og comment clearly pointed out op's hypocrisy & the irony about this thread |
It's trolling within trolling. Meta-trolling. This is great.
|
dude. you attacked me in your first comment. i think if you read through the OP it might become obvious by the fact that no one has called me out for feigning internet etiquette ignorance that i was posing a genuine question. it appears you have 17 posts. you are the only one to say anything of the sort. nuff said.
and pedestrian: thanks for clearing that up. |

I'm taking a break from my shopping to answer this without being too meta that it goes over everyone's heads and becomes "Hermione is a bitch tho wow what is joeks" again
Oh wait oops Anyway A troll's real definition can vary from the user or the reader's perceptions. A popular type is the malicious troll who relentlessly aims to gain the control, despite the implications and consequences. It's rage is untempered by anything resembling logic or patience, or the self awareness to see that their every barbed word is a paradox. A second kind of troll is one who sees that this troll is more than just a hateful machine, but recognises it more as an abused dog chasing it's tail in front of the owners it bites in hopes for an outreached hand. These trolls are often not truly malicious, yet will engage in similiar behaviour to the first if they detect the manifestation of insecurities and entitlement becoming less of an abstract concept, but a concrete one with real life consequences. The third kind of troll, is the sort of magical creature that AwwSugar and FETCHER defeated for me in the girl's bathrooms, in our first year at Hogwarts |

Oh wait! Sssh! Here comes an unwary passer-by... To be more serious, I see a troll as someone who really is not interested in a forum, or a discussion, so much as creating arguments, bad feeling and making themselves feel superior to everyone else. Like someone running into a debating society and shouting "You're all queer!" It's someone who does things purely to be noticed and make a fuss, usually negatively. Someone who wants all the focus on them, and doesn't in any other way contribute to the forum. That's how I read it, anyway. |
Can you hit up the Tin Man and the Lion up then and journey off?

Anytime you are confused about memes online just head over to know your meme. They have a pretty extensive page on trolling and the different types.

In the late 1980s, Internet users adopted the word “troll” to denote someone who intentionally disrupts online communities. Early trolling was relatively innocuous, taking place inside of small, single-topic Usenet groups. The trolls employed what the M.I.T. professor Judith Donath calls a “pseudo-naïve” tactic, asking stupid questions and seeing who would rise to the bait. The game was to find out who would see through this stereotypical newbie behavior, and who would fall for it. As one guide to trolldom puts it, “If you don’t fall for the joke, you get to be in on it." |
