Gaming on Linux is slowly becoming less of a problem, Steam is now available for Ubuntu and it has been added to the repositories of many of the other popular distributions. Not only that but with the explosion of indie gaming in the last 5 years, a lot of games were also released for Linux. If it's not released for Linux, it is still possible to play using Wine.

Looking at the list of Linux games on Steam now there's actually quite a respectable number of fairly big PC titles available. TF2, Killing Floor, Crusader Kings 2, FTL, Surgeon Simulator... There's no big name publisher support apart from traditionally PC-loving companies like Valve and Paradox but it's a decent enough variety. I'd try it out to see what the ports are actually like but I'm such a noob at Ubuntu that I'd probably never be able to figure out how to get Steam working on it, let alone installing and playing anything.
