Still a proud Democrat, though I have my reservations with a few things.
I completely agree 'FE'. My biggest problem with the Democratic party is how COWARDICE they are when it comes to doing what we ELECT them to do. Believe me, I'm just as disgusted with them as I am the Republicans. Be that as it may, not voting ISN'T an option for me. It just comes down to the lesser of two evils I suppose ( ). Great comment. Thanks for responding.

They haven't been viable options in quite some time. Because money is such a big part of politics here, the independents don't do well as they're poorly funded compared to the Republican and Democratic parties. A lot of people view voting independent as essentially throwing away your vote.

That seems to be a common perception, it becomes a sort of self fulfulling-prophecy. Independents over here have done really well the past two elections. In the UK supporters of UKIP considered it a wasted vote, now UKIP is deemed a very possible threat. A little bit of confidence in an independent party can go a long way, your votes more than likely won't get them many seats but the more support they get the more they'll be seen as a liable option. It's similar to the bystander effect, if you want others to support independents you'll have to start supporting them yourself, regardless of the outcome a little bit more confidence put into a party you agree with is not a wasted vote. Voting for a party you don't care for on the other hand is.

True, however many people here view voting for either party as voting for a lesser of two evils. In my case personally, Republicans spout some batshit crazy stuff, while Democrats are far more moderate and generally invest in social programs (an important issue for me). Therefore it's hard not to vote Democrat because I don't want a Republican victory.

It's a frustrating dilemma.

The frustrating dilemma is voting blue in a state that always ends up going red and vice versa. The only time you feel like your vote might matter is if you live in a swing state.

The way I see it, keeping either party in power is slow death. So long as people are willing to vote for "the lesser of two evils", then both parties will continue to do what they're already doing, which is leading this country closer and closer to terminal political paralysis and stagnation. It sounds good in the short term to vote for one to keep the other out of power, but in the long term it's pointless.
