What the **** Is Your Dream?

Alright, so, what's your deepest dream? Could be anything.

Me, I wanna not work hard and not accomplish anything in particular and find a nice little out-of-the-way tropical island the tourists have never heard of to live out my days in quiet laziness, pretending that the outside world doesn't exist. I don't know what island, maybe in the Carribean, or some unknown Hawaiian island, or if all else fails, a Pacific Island that is hopefully not a coral atoll (seriously, a water line that is below sea level and brackish, no good soil to grow anything, and probably small enough that you could spit from one end to the other).

I won't live in the lap of luxury though. I'll find some nice ramshackle place on the beach that may or may not get washed out to sea during every other storm. Get myself a lawn chair so I can watch the sunset with a beer in one hand and a joint in the other. Maybe go down to the local bar on the beach run by a fifty year old fellow ex-patriot who left his job as a Wall Street exec twenty years ago and hasn't worn real shoes since, and get pleasantly plastered with all the other slackass ex-pats who could give a **** about much of anything besides fishing, gathering coconuts, and surfing. To past the rest of the time I imagine I'll get a job at the bar, or maybe fix boats or something (and possibly learn how to actually fix boats).

And when my relatives try to get me to come home for Christmas, I'll just tell them that the only boat off the island just got attacked by pirates.

My dream which I'm already working on is to get a dickload of degrees and work with at risk LGBTQ+ youth bc there are so few resources for those who are young and queer, especially to find a shrink if you're gender variant.

My new dream is Jaime Lannister

I haven't even seen the show and he's already become my favorite character pretty much since day one when he started getting his own chapters in the books. A quality douchebag.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I've been all over his whole redemption storyline, but it's his true douchiness that made me love him in the first place.

It is nice to see a pairing that's not hot guy/hot girl or ugly guy/hot girl for once. Granted, I've not seen what Brienne looks like in the show. They're definitely cute together though.

I'd love to include two chicks, but something tells me that bicurious, hotty ex-pats are gonna be hard to find. I picture an island filled with dissolute middle-aged guys wondering why a thirty year old is already so disillusioned. There's always the native girls I guess, but I imagine that without money they would probably just think I was a weirdo.

Ninetales 07-24-2013 09:33 AM

Mine is to be a comedy screenwriter, specifically to showrun my own sitcom with of course, final say in all creative decisions.

My retirement plan:

Cabana Boy by day, lounge lizard by night, on some caribbean island. Probably Bermuda.

I'd prefer mine to be a little more out of the way (especially since a small house over there is probably about as much as a mansion where I live), but Bermuda is also not in the tropics, and hence, no tropical heat. I love the idea of a tropical island, but I'm fat and I sweat like a beer bottle. Are you actually serious BTW, or just kinda joking? Cause I was honestly serious with mine.

Plankton 07-24-2013 10:07 AM

I am quite serious. It's been my dream for a long time now. I've never been anywhere even remotely tropical, except for the California coast when I was a teenager. Even my daughter has been to Hawaii with her grandmother while I stayed back home since I had to work.

I'm a sun and water kind of person, but I'm landlocked. Lake Michigan is hardly a replacement for blue waters, white sands, and palm trees.

We should go in on a house so we can spend as much money as possible on booze and surf boards. Not to mention two can find a way to scam rich, dumb vacationers out of their hard-earned money far better than one.

Frownland 07-24-2013 10:17 AM

My dream is to impact someone with my music, that's all I really care about for now. A nice piece of property in Northern California wouldn't be bad though.

I do have a friend that has a house in Jamaica. It's pretty much just a mud hut built by some of the locals for him since he spends 1/3 of every year there, but from the stories he tells me, it can be a bit dangerous over there.

Yeah, I could do that, but I'd sleep on my back everynight for fear of you getting drunk. We all know what happens when the Batlord gets his drunk on.

For what it's worth, I was Googling about finding a way to live on a tropical island without actually doing much of anything, and I found this.

Well, thats one mans aproach. I plan on getting a steady gig playing Wes Montgomery type stuff during the evening hours, and spend my days serving rich old ladies. Hopefully I won't have to take one for the team too often.

What the hell does a cabana boy even do? You know, besides dance half-naked for creepy SNL cougars.

Unfortunately it seems that one of the key requirements is that you must be attractive. Now don't get me wrong, aside from a little excess weight, I don't think I'm a goblin or anything, but something tells me that a rich widow is gonna be looking for something a little bit more than a six, or possibly a seven if i really tried, in their boy toys.

Better start working out now then. Heck, even Fabio was probably a troll before he grew his locks and got all buff and ****.

My ultimate dream is to have a really nice work/life balance. It sounds stupid but in the profession I'm in it's kinda difficult. I'm not the kind of person who's going to say that my dream is to win the lottery and not work hard and relax and retire etc... because I still want to work, I like that my job makes a difference to people's lives and is of value in society, so I'll always want to contribute to our world in some way... but I just dream of it being less of a burden creeping into my personal life. I feel that my own personal life and my own family are important to me, yet I sacrifice time with them and for myself for work. My dream is to not sacrifice my own life for work, I guess. I don't want to be one of those parents who spend more time and effort with the children they teach than their own children.

According to Charlie Day, that's entirely possible now. I was listening to him on a recent podcast by The Nerdist and he said the FX network uses a business model that lets artists do whatever they want, and succeed or fail on their own terms (except they can't say 'fuck' - and Louis CK has gone into more detail about which words FX disallows. It's not many). He said they can afford to do this because they don't pay anybody anything.

He said they're basically like, "Here's nine dollars, take it and do whatever you want." And that's how 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia' got off the ground.

I'm a primary school teacher...but I work at a school in a very low socio-economic area with families who are either new refugees or from generational poverty. There's a lot of unpleasant situations and a lot of liaising with DHS, not to mention a lot of pressure from the government and higher forces to get these kids literate... you also end up spending a lot of time intervening and working with them in their personal lives as well as their education, all of this as unpaid extra hours of course!

That has to be a really hard job. One of my friends sister does a similar thing and she is always stressed out and worrying about her kids, and almost always disappointed in the parents for doing absolutely nothing or just not being around. Im not sure if thats how it is with your students but I would imagine that is a really hard way to teach. I do suppose a benefit would be if you can successfully teach there you can really teach anywhere without to much trouble.

Yeah, exactly! It's frustrating in regards to the parents, you pretty much end up being their parent as well as their teacher, especially because I teach 5 year olds :( The refugee parents are lovely and so grateful for the life they are starting here, they just need a lot of support. The generational poverty families... well, they are pretty hopeless. I had a little special needs girl last year who had 4 and a half years old had to make her own lunch, which was her finding whatever she could find and putting it in her schoolbag - often a sole piece of ham or cheese just thrown in her bag.

My dream is to build my own cabin on my own property in the Alaskan wilderness. I would have a garden, a goat, a dog and bring with me a guitar, a typewriter and my record player. Once a month I would hike into the nearest town to buy supplies and send off what I had written or recorded. I would be largely self-sustainable and live out my life as a hermit.
