I imagine anything that puts pressure on the back of your throat will have a chance at working, but you want to maximize that pressure. Next time try forcing the air in your mouth into the back of your throat without swallowing it -- sort of like how you can force the air in your mouth into just one cheek -- and see if it doesn't work almost every time. It helps if you stuck your tongue to the back of your throat too, to put even more pressure on the air.
