Metal has to have a certain...something for me to like it. Problem is, I don't know what that elusive "something" is.

Have you given a listen to any of the progressive metal bands. You may like that.

I'll take recs you have when I come to the letter which starts the title of the album.

I honestly don't have any. I haven't listened to enough progressive metal to be like, "oh you'll enjoy [insert terrible band name here]." Lol. But from what I've heard from bands like periphery and Opeth, you might actually enjoy them.

Frownland recommended Opeth the other day. It's been slipped into rotation. It won't come up for a while, though, since, if I remember correctly, the album title starts with D.

Ok. But i will rec something I love. Songs For The Deaf by Queens Of The Stone Age. One of my all time favorites and contains enough sonic difference that anyone could enjoy a song or two on it.
