I've always thought of "mathematics" as a discipline of learning, whereas "math" is the actual mental process of mathematical calculation.

I don't know about that. Doesn't sound silly too me since mostly everyone says it like that in the UK. Plus "math" sounds cheesy and American. Like "gym class" or taco bell
