Well the articles der, die and das are rather randomly chosen.
There's no rule, why something has it's special gender.
The rain is a dude, love is a chick, the sky is a dude, stars are dudes, genitals are neutrums.. There's absolutely no rule.
I think that's extremely hard to remember, when German is not your native tongue

That's the nice thing about English, despite all its quirks: with the exceptions of ships, aircraft, cars, and locomotives (all female), the genders make sense. That was one of the main difficulties I had learning German.

I think that's a poetic thing. I'm not sure what the actual rule is, but I've always referred to the sun as neuter. Hobbits, on the other hand, refer to the sun as female. But that's another story...
