Brown or white bread?

Brown bread for me, white bread doesn't taste anything and it's unhealthy.

Can someone make this a poll?

Cuthbert 03-23-2014 02:57 PM

Depends what it's for.

Bovril on toast - Brown
Sandwiches - White

Some sandwiches require brown bread though.

RoxyRollah 03-23-2014 02:59 PM

oatmeal bread!!
pumpernickel!

Yeah, you're right.

White bread for toast, but brown bread in general.

Taxman 03-23-2014 03:36 PM

Brown bread is good only with a huge amount of cheese. Good white bread rules. Especially toast.

Tristesse 03-23-2014 03:36 PM

White. White is by far the best.

Please don't quote this out of context and make me seem like a racist.

Brown bread, when made right, tastes heavenly when combined with cheese.

And Tris, you just gave us all brilliant, BRILLIANT ideas

Circe 03-23-2014 04:31 PM

Chip butties are the only situation where white bread is superior.

cheese on toast w/ lea & perrins
bacon butty w/ hp
egg & soldiers
eggy bread
cucumber sandwiches

smh at using brown bread for any of those

fried bread in a full english as well

cheese toasties

anything with salmon or tuna - brown bread though

blackcoffee 03-23-2014 05:27 PM

sourdough > everything.
I like "brown" bread and "white" bread equally but sourdough is amazing no matter how you use it.
except for in a pb&j, never again.

Tristesse 03-23-2014 05:29 PM

Tiger bread goddamnit

GravitySlips 03-23-2014 05:45 PM

Brown everything. Pasta, bread, rice.

It wasn't always that way, but it is now.

Yes! All brown everything!

I need to start switching to brown pasta and rice. I only use white if it is given to me but I wouldn't buy it on my own.

I should even get into using brown sugar as well or honey to sweeten instead of white sugar.

Cuthbert 03-23-2014 05:59 PM

chicken in black bean sauce with brown rice :(
macaroni cheese with brown pasta :(

fuck, imagine curry with brown naan, wholemeal keema , upsetting.

Tristesse 03-23-2014 06:02 PM

Even the idea of macaroni cheese with brown pasta makes me want to cry

Fiddling Rothschild 03-23-2014 06:07 PM

Yes, this health and well-being craze can sneak up on anyone who isn't is a cave dweller busy sharpening stones. So brown everything it is - although I've quite forgotten about any consciousness with regards to difference in taste. Never have had any bovril or chip butties before though - usually tend to cram my bread with whatever I happened to find available in the fridge - mozzarella, peppers, eggs, tomatoes, eggplant, meat and so on and so forth.

simplephysics 03-23-2014 06:11 PM

I don't do the food shopping, but my boyfriend always brings home potato bread, so, neither?

try it mate, it's unreal.

Bovril - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

you can make a drink out of it or spread it on toast, or use it to cook with in stews etc

just remembered taramasalata is better with wholemeal pita

Salty meat extract - possibly a temporary solution to the sugary spread that I cram myself with in the morning. Gosh, there's that petty hypocondrism again. On my grocery list

Delicious!

Bovril, now there's something I've not had in a while - since whenever I was last at a football match, of course. Years ago! The thought of bovril spread on toast is conflicting, though - no idea how that'd pan out.

Pet_Sounds 03-24-2014 04:32 AM

I'll take good white bread. But it has to be home-baked or otherwise made decently.

It's similar to Marmite but much better (in my opinion, though I like Marmite too). The first time I had it it was in drink form, I tried it on toast after expecting it to be **** but it was very good. But yeah works a lot better with brown/wholemeal bread.

Yeah the whole wheat/brown pasta is just terrible in all pasta dishes.

As for bread, I don't really care. White is good and so is the whole wheat stuff. I also like 12 grain, flax seed, and rye bread.

Rjinn 03-24-2014 07:53 AM

"Brown" bread as in wholemeal? Yuck. I'll take multi-grain and pumpkin seed any day.

djchameleon 03-24-2014 08:00 AM

I'm pretty sure brown bread just meaning any variation of wheat.

Rjinn 03-24-2014 08:05 AM

I see. Don't think I've heard it being called "brown" bread here. Just white, wholemeal, multi-grain and rye mainly.

Yeah I think the term "brown bread" is mostly an American thing, but it means whole wheat/whole grain here.

Actually it seems to be a European thing because Briks started up the thread and he's not from America.

Most people here say wheat/whole grain as well.

Or maybe it's just Briks himself that calls it brown bread. No need to slander whole groups of people. :p:

Okay, interesting! I had never really heard the term brown bread before now either.

Rjinn 03-24-2014 08:22 AM

Yeah, multigrain bread here can be a bit different though, in terms of variety. It can be more than several refined grains instead of whole grains.

Potato Bread FTW!

Burning Down 03-24-2014 08:35 AM

Potato bread? Woah. Sounds interesting - I've never heard of it before.

Cuthbert 03-24-2014 08:38 AM

Circe's post has reminded me of chip butties. I'm going to the chippy later and making a chip butty.

It's a bit heartier than normal white bread. I prefer it over anything, except a good marble rye, or pumpernickel on a Reuben. Thats the only exception.

I'm looking for stores that sell it here because I'm interested, but so far it's only available at expensive specialty food markets and Whole Paycheck (and I don't want to go there ughhhh).

We don't really say it in Norway either, we say "grovt brød" meaning something like "rough bread". Didn't know what you Americans would call it, so I just chose something I'd heard before.

Frownland 03-24-2014 09:00 AM

I prefer the multigrain breads, so my vote goes to brown bread.

They sell it pretty much anywhere here, but it got an "F" for nutritional rating.

Sara Lee Country Potato Bread (20 oz)

Maybe Canukians are more health conscious, therefor supply/demand is weaker up there... ya hey dare. Dontcha know.

:p:

Cuthbert 03-24-2014 09:12 AM

We say it here. Pretty much everyone would know what it is.

It's also rhyming slang as well, brown bread - dead.
