Default Supreme Court Rules Against File-swappers

complete article

The US Supreme Court has ruled that file-sharing companies are to blame for what users do with their software.
The surprise ruling could start a legal assault on the creators of file-sharing networks such as Grokster and Morpheus.

The case was brought by 28 movie and music makers who claimed that rampant piracy was denting profits.

The Supreme Court judges were expected to rule in favour of the file-sharers because of legal precedents set when video recorders first appeared.

mostly file sharing companies like morpheus and i think soulseek might be on the hotplate too, along with kazaa, but dont worry, basically its saying that the companies are responsible for how the users use it rather than YOU getting into trouble for it. (at least thats how i understood it). The MSN/AIM thing is a good idea misfits, keep it going.

Yeah, this just means people will download from users in England now. I doubt it effects many.

I'm in England. w00t.

Over here the record companies have a very nice young chap who pops up on the news to tell everyone who downloads Coldplay albums that they are killing the music industry, along with threatening to come round and beat us up.

well isn't it the people that work in those companies that put the files on these networks? like the 3rd starwars episode, that one was stolen from production or something i heard....so what teen,as the stereotype goes, has access to those places?

No, "they" are the companies that create/facilitate the pier to pier file sharing program, meaning if you had a song you could upload it onto the program and I could download it. The people who create the software just enable you to do that.
