^Yes I see it too, it's a big terrifying MB bug that causes the "last post"'s posting date in any thread with a poll attached to it to show as when the poll was most recently answered. Beware!

I prefer the term geek. I always assume a nerd is somebody who is smart. I am not academically smart at all. I do enjoy geeky stuff, like Marvel movies, video games that interest me and music. I don't like to hang out with my fellow geeks much tho, since most of them that I know mostly only wanna talk about video games and movies and ****, and they happen to be socially awkward as ****.

I'm not a nerd. I'm a philosopher.

I've been informed in the past that I'm definitely a dork rather than a nerd. (I guess because I read Victorian household & toxicology manuals and medieval bestiaries and hoard old things rather than play games/read comics and such. I think I definitely would have been a nerd in Victorian times.)

It's interesting, though-- a lot of the self-proclaimed nerds I meet tend to just be mid-20s dudebro types who are utterly indistinguishable from your garden-variety dudebros (ugh now I'm imagining a literal garden of miniature men in cargo shorts & League of Legend shirts, I hate my brain) aside from the fact that they play MMOs for several hours per day. I've dated a couple of them and it wasn't fun. I also briefly worked at a video game company as a QA tester, which was also not fun, despite what many tend to assume.

When I think of nerds I think of nice, long-haired D&D-playing comic-reading renfaire types. (Speaking of D&D, has there been a thread for that yet?)

There are too many different types of nerds to list, though. Horror nerds, literary nerds... *gazes wistfully over the horizon*

Sorry, but MB ain't big enough for two Innerspaceboys. MB tradition dictates that this be settled with a winner-takes-all cage match. There can be only one.

There is enough room for a male and female version of the same type though

If they are socially awkward, they are dorks.

Nerd Credentials:
  • Built a retrobox server with every episode of every godd*mn show I watched as a kid.
  • Closet full of disco shirts, fedoras, and late 19th-century attire
  • Completely out of touch with the planet
  • Constructed a Fruchterman Reingold graph depicting the web-like interrelationships between my 60 favorite sub and micro-genres for kicks.
  • Former AV crew staff
  • Good games need only one red button
  • House looks like the residence of an elderly Englishwoman
  • I alphabetized this list.
  • If you didn't build it yourself, I probably think less of you.
  • Linux.
  • Misses the BBS community
  • MS-DOS 6.0
  • Owns a cravat.
  • Seriously gets off on cataloging and large library management
  • Spent hundreds of dollars on old Sesame Street merch and somehow thinks that is a perfectly reasonable thing to do.
  • World's largest collection of Pac-Man Fever merch. I have no shame.

[EDIT] Finnegans Wake, b*tches.

Can you expound on the difference between a "cravat" and an "ascot," please, for those who are not in-the-know of sophisticated haberdashery.

The key phrase to remember is that "all ascots are cravats, but not all cravats are ascots."

A few different sites attempt to resolve this stubbornly persistent question. They each get it right, but a picture says a thousand words, so have a look at Bob's wordpress blog entry featuring comparison shots of each.

The article I sport most often is a Regency cravat - an element of formal attire which I usually wear with a gentleman's frock, a beaver fur topper, and a walking stick.
