They're attached to the name and they're popular because they have a reputation for being good. Personally I don't like them, the bass is too artificial. I do understand paying top dollar for a nice set of headphones though, just go with a good brand like TDK or Sennheiser.

best sounding headphones I ever owned came with a cheap bass amp. The low end on those things...

It's definitely weird how much more the better quality sounding ones cost. I can't imagine they're that much more expensive to make

Right? I saw this sidewalk sign that said "great holiday stocking stuffers!" and had a picture of Beats on them.

What the hell kind of family puts $300 headphones in a stocking as a supplemental gift?

Bill Gates?

They are fucking shite.

If I'm spending lots of money on electrical equipment, I want to do my research and make sure I'm getting the best product for what I want.

Your average teenager who has bought Beats hasn't bought them for the sound, they've bought them because Monster have done a great job of creating the demand for Beats (they also resort to flat out lying in their marketing btw). Typically, Beats owners will say the sound is amazing; it's probably amazing relative to what Beats owners usually use -- which is Apple's stock headphones that cost about 2p to manufacture.

Anyone even one step close to being an audiophile wouldn't touch these fuckers with a barge pole, go on Head-Fi or another audio website, nobody on there is going to recommend a pair of these, these guys > average Joes with a MORE BASS PLZ!!!111! attitude to music. Dre himself doesn't even use Beats to produce, here's a pic of him in studio using £130 Audio Technica ATH-M50's:

I use Beats, and their awesome. Don't mistake that. But the price is ridiculous. And that's mainly because of the brand. There is way more headphones out there that are cheaper and better. But I bought my Beats when I was 12.

The oldest piece of gear I own is a set of AKG K240 headphones. Bought them new in 1980. They are beat to sh*t but I haven't found anything that sounds better.
