Then you'll long for the days when the worst you had to put up with was non-capitalisation....

I've been discovering that stoner metal is good for studying. Not so much going on that I'm distracted, not so little that I get bored, and fun enough that I'm put in a decent mood.

Good picks so far have been Goatsnake's Flower of Disease, Boris' Heavy Rocks, Down's NOLA, Iron Monkey's Our Problem, and now Earth's Pentastar: In the Style of Demons. Gonna try some stoner rock soon, as I think some Clutch and Monster Magnet would be brilliant.

Full disclosure: I'm procrastinating as I type this.

i need music with no lyrics/vocals to study. jazz works well for me, and some classical. if the music does have lyrics i prefer it be in another language so i can't understand it. my ADD makes it hard enough for me to read without having lyrics to distract me.

Study method update: I now realize that it doesn't have to be stoner metal. Overkill, Demolition Hammer, and Devastation are all working just as well at volumes that should be vibrating my computer screen too much to even be readable. How does this work? The key seems to be having two bigass cups of coffee. I study hardcore as a mother****er!

Edit: On reflection, I think the higher volume is actually making my studying more effective. I don't know that this would work with all music, but the wall of sound created by thrash and stoner seem to kind of shut out the outside world and keep me focused on what's in front of me. I think the effect might be even better with headphones (which I unfortunately don't have). Will try with more extreme metal. I don't know if this would work with something like hip hop, where the greater focus on vocals might be more distracting, but maybe some Southern rap, with that big production, would be good too.

I've never had an issue with lyrics in music while studying, tbh. I like music that you can lose yourself in like drone music or stuff like Coltrane's Ascension because I feel like it helps me aim my focus. I study to whatever music I'm into, though. There's been a lot of research done on music and study habits, and listening to music that you prefer is said to be more effective than listening to stuff you feel neutral on, hate, or no music at all. So you'll probably find that most things that you already listen to will be useful for studying, Batlord.

I did a research paper exploring the relationship between tempo and focus/memory retention through surveys and experiments. No relationship.

i can just say personally, probably cause i'm a rap fan, that the above advice doesn't work for me.i tend to get distracted by the rapper's lyrics. i can handle rock lyrics better though i guess.

edit - keep in mind im ADD. easily distracted as it is. if my brain is forced to chose between ghostface talking about some white hoe sucking him off vs some book about network protocols... gee i wonder which one will capture my attention

It probably doesn't apply to you because it's not uncommon to leave out the mentally handicapped in a study.
