A hot dog is a hot dog. Duh. Just like a hamburger is a hamburger. They both exist in and of themselves. Iconic. Timeless.

The big debate comes when you bring subs, grinders, and hoagies into the mix.

You're under the assumption that a hot dog bun is two pieces of bread. Last I saw, a hot dog bun is one large piece of bread folded into a bun, thus only making it one piece.

Gyro sandwiches use one piece of pita but they're still considered sandwiches.

^Also, open face sandwiches only use one piece of bread and are still considered a sandwich.

So the next time I'm ordering a hot dog from some place, should I now say I want a hot dog sandwich? I have never in my life heard it be called a hot dog sandwich.

It wouldn't be incorrect, it'd would just make you look sillier than usual.

I will admit that there are reasons why someone would call it a sandwich, but i just don't see it. Also, the toppings. As far as I know, ketchup, sauerkraut, and relish don't seem to be traditional toppings for a sandwich. I could be wrong.
