Vote for the Journeys! (Journal Awards)

Last year I ran the very first Journey Awards for Members' journals. All I did though was pick the ones I thought were best in each category, but this year I'd like to make it a little more democratic and inclusive, so I'm asking anyone who wants to or cares to please nominate your favourite journal and/or author.

It shouldn't be a terribly long-winded process (though it might turn out to be) as there are only so many active journals, but the same basic rules apply as for the Members Awards last year: you can nominate up to three people, or journals, in any category and he or she that receives the most votes will, you know, win. All nominations to be sent to me via PM please. Categories this year are:

Most Informative Journal: self-explanatory I guess. Which of the journals gives you the most information on the subject about which it is written?
Most Entertaining Journal: Not necessarily the funniest, but which journal do you enjoy the most and return to again and again?
The next three are pretty much as it says on the tin.
Best Writer (Member)
Best Researcher (This will probably tie into the Most Informative Journal, but is for the member, not the journal)
Best New Journal (Must have been started on or before January 2015)
Best Classic Journal (Must be at least two years in existence, counting this one; so earliest start date would be February 2013)
Hardest Worked On Journal: What journal is worked on and updated the most, but also not just updated with short entries, YouTubes or one-liners. These have to be proper, decent entries.
Freshest Idea for a Journal: what journal tackles a subject nobody else has, or had up to that time?
Most Engaging Journal: This is the relaunch of the “Most commented on” award, and refers to a journal that spawns the most interest, debate and of course comment.
Most Personal Journal: What journal author lets us into his or her personal world and shares their own experience with us through their writing?
Funniest Journal; Can anyone topple Batty this year?
Most Improved Journal: Must be no older than one year old, so from February 2014 onwards.
Lifetime Achievement Award

I'm not doing awards for negative things like “Worst Journal” or “Biggest Flop”, as firstly everybody who works on their journals puts a lot of effort into them, and I don't wish to dismiss anyone's work. Also, the recipient does not want the award and anyway it can inspire or foster a feeling of ill-will and also even revenge from one person or more to another. Let's keep it positive, huh?

I'm also open to any other nominations people think I should include, so let me know if you have any ideas. Anyone can vote, whether you have a journal or not, but obviously if you do have a journal you can't vote for that. And if you have more than one, you still can't vote for them. Any of them. Or pay people to. Batty, I'm looking in your direction...

I hope to have all this concluded by April, though it may be sooner. I know we had one member last year who disagreed with the whole idea and asked not to be included, and of course his wishes were honoured, even though he would easily have won at least one award. If any journal author feels the same, please let me know, either by PM or posting here, and I'll discount any votes you may get.

Oriphiel 02-22-2015 05:43 PM

Sounds like fun. Good luck counting up all the nominations/votes!

Thelonious Monkey 02-22-2015 05:45 PM

I disagree with the idea. Discount my votes, thanks. (Pshhh, like I was gonna be getting any )

Key 02-22-2015 05:46 PM

Yes! Been waiting for this!

Are you serious or just being pithy, as I need to know if you really do want to be counted in. I'd say the old Dancefloor might garner a few votes...

Thelonious Monkey 02-23-2015 10:48 AM

I disagree, for real. That's why I didn't put my votes in for the MB Awards. I don't want mine voted for anything. It's a journal. Read it, or get the fuck out. Why do we need awards to highlight the fact that (insert journal here) does this (insert award) better than yours? I'm probably gonna get skewered for writing this, but yeah, discount my votes. My journal is there for people to read if they want to. It's not a competition. But, do have fun. I will be following, and its great banter, so yeah.

Plankton 02-23-2015 10:52 AM

I'd also like a discount please. I like cheap.

Why would you think that?

Because I had an opinion, and expressed it. Shit doesn't fly on MB.

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-23-2015 11:06 AM

It's how you express it.
You could have just said 'I'd rather not have mine included thanks' and left it at that.
But then you added the thing about not getting any votes which just made you come across as being a bit petty.

The Batlord 02-23-2015 11:07 AM

What's with all the spoil sportin' mother****ers? 'S'all in good fun, dog.

It is. What's your point?

Don't get half a peace sign.

Trollheart 02-23-2015 12:20 PM

Anyone who doesn't want to be counted is free to say so. Your post just looked like it could have been a joke, which is why I wasn't sure.

Bow out by all means but as Batty says it's all in fun, not to mention a small amount of recognition for all the hard work put in by the authors, so please don't diss the idea just because you don't agree with it.

So I'll opt you out.

Plankton, are you serious or was that just a joke?
Also, anyone else who actually wants to be excluded please make it clear and don't put in any jokes, as otherwise I have to keep checking if you are serious and that's a pain.

I was poking fun at the phrase "...discount my votes".

It was a joke.

Great idea Troll ol boy. Rock on.

Trollheart 02-28-2015 05:27 AM

Response has been mega-slow. I mean, mega. If you guys intend to vote but just haven't got around to it yet, let me know, as this is looking like being dead in the water before it begins. More in the update thread tomorrow...

Did you get my votes?

Ashwell John 02-28-2015 06:54 AM

Really nice and humorous. I'll go for casting vote.

DwnWthVwls 02-28-2015 07:41 AM

I want to be counted. Please write my hip hop journal TH.

Thanks :D

This sounds like a cool idea. I don't read the journals enough to participate sorry Troll.

I did yes. You were one of the two (I counted them, twice) I received.

Don't go starting a trend. If I write your journal, then everyone will want me to write theirs, and there's no putting that genie back in the bottle!

Key 02-28-2015 12:34 PM

Sent my votes.

You should totally write that journal some day! It's been awhile since anyone had one that was focused on Hip-Hop, so it'd be a nice change of pace.

Isbjørn 03-13-2015 03:18 PM

Bumpz.

How many people have voted so far?

I put my votes in a while ago as well.

Trollheart 03-13-2015 08:21 PM

Still only three. :( I think at this point

Key 03-13-2015 08:24 PM

Well that's a shame. If people don't want to put any attention to the good things that people are trying to do at this forum, why bother even doing them. Often times I see people complaining that there is nothing new being done about people putting out good ideas, but when people come up with good ideas, there's suddenly no support. This forum is full of hypocrites.

You should have at least five, if Briks, Ki, Oriphiel, you, and I have all been counted. Don't give up hope yet--maybe some other journal authors will read this and contribute.

Trollheart 03-13-2015 08:29 PM

Well it is odd, as not even the people who are writing journals (yourself, Briks --- no I will not call him isjohn or whatever! --- and Orph excepted) could be bothered to vote. That's what, three weeks now and none of the others have sent in any votes. So in fairness, if they're not going to take a few minutes to vote then why should I go through all that, for basically nothing?

But fear not: your efforts are rewarded (kind of) through the update thread, and that will certainly be continuing. Also, you never know whose journal might be next for Classic Journals hint hint ... :pssst:

I guess i'm just of the opinion that I always love these types of things. It adds a little flare to an otherwise boring concept (not that journals are boring, but adding something to the whole grand scheme of things is always nice). Oh well.

Isbjørn and Oriphiel. How could you get those names so wrong?
Briks new name is is Is + bjørn. "Is" as in ice and "bjørn" as in bear. How can you claim yourself an Annafan (fan of Agnetha Fältskog) and not ever heard of of the name Björn/Bjørn? I know Oriphiel from plug. I thought a nickname was inevitable and came up "Oreo" but most people call Oriphiel "Ori." I think either are much better name than Orph. "Orph" sounds like a sound a dolphin would make.

Dude, there are so many journals, and so many posts each week, and I just don't have it in me to read them all, so it's kind of pointless for me to vote on them. Even you say you tend to skim a lot of the journals for your weekly updates.

Urban Hat€monger ? 03-14-2015 09:46 AM

Nobody is voting because they're being PMed straight to you.
If they were posted in here for people to see it would create discussion and more interest.

If that's true, I'm disappointed. I always look forward to an in depth weekly update from TH because I know he likes to read the journals and give feedback. Skimming them sort of defeats the purpose of that.
