Earth Hour 2015

this saturday night(from 8:30 to 9:30 pm every time zone), everyone will be switching off their lights during to fight climate change.

ftfy

Earth Hour is little more than a symbolic event, I think. Switching off your lights for one hour of the year means dick if you're not doing anything the rest of the year.

Plankton 03-26-2015 11:12 AM

I'm gonna drive my Canyonero around town while spraying aerosol cans out of the window in support of this great cause.

Psy-Fi 03-26-2015 11:21 AM

Yet another example of the silliness of feel-good symbolism over substance.

Chula Vista 03-26-2015 11:23 AM

1 hour?

That's like the equivalent of having $1,000 and deciding to save 11 cents.

The intent is to raise general awareness, but for many, this will just be something to make them feel better about their consumption and emissions. I really hope this is not all the majority is willing to do to stop climate change, because if so, I genuinely fear for the extended survival of life on earth.

International Shoot a Transformer Day would work much better.

Huh, I do that every night before I go to bed so I'm well ahead of the curve.

The Batlord 03-26-2015 01:30 PM

My global warming-denying, Republican grandfather who treats me like the scum of the earth every time I leave a light on after I leave a room is doing more to reverse climate change than these goofballs.

Death to Michael Bay Day.

$660,000,000. Which, if you distribute among six billion people would equal... eleven cents. Redistribute that wealth, baby.

Exactomundo.

There's 8,766 hours in a year. 1 / 8,766 = 0.0001

So instead of a person using 100% of power for the year that one hour off means they're only using 99.989%

Key 03-26-2015 02:14 PM

This sounds stupid as hell.

Ninetales 03-26-2015 02:37 PM

if you donate $50 to charity its only .1% of your annual pay if you make 50k. may as well not donate anything imo whats the point if youre not donating it all am I right

Well, if you're gonna start donating to charity then you might as well commit to more than just $50 just the one time. And global warming is a problem that isn't going to be affected by the equivalent of $50, whereas you can actually feed a few homeless people for that much.

Chula Vista 03-26-2015 02:43 PM

Yeah, totally apples to oranges.

Ninetales 03-26-2015 02:50 PM

my point is that accumulation matters more than the individual contribution

With money, yes.

This whole Earth Hour thing is just touchy, feely BS for the tree huggers.

But you're not accumulating ****. You're not even really encouraging anyone who isn't already concerned with the issue to do anything about it. Education and public discourse are hopefully going to accomplish something, not symbolic crap like this that the global warming deniers are just going to laugh off as hippy, pinko self-indulgence. By all means, go ahead and make yourself feel like an activist. I'm sure it'll be just as useful as Kony 2012.

Nameless 03-26-2015 03:05 PM

I always thought of Earth Hour as more of an awareness thing really, and kind of an example of what people can do if they work together. Just a very ineffective one. Like International Women's Day or Black History Month. At least it's only an hour. Some people just try to make too big of a deal out of it like with many things.

I reckon it would save me about 2 to 3 cents on my annual electric bill.

I don't need to be reminded to use less electric power. My monthly electric bill is more than enough to motivate me to use less electricity throughout the year.

Well, global warming is a big deal, so arrangements related to it should be given attention. But I do think that this event shouldn't get hyped, because even though it's meant to raise awareness, what it does is make sofa activists think they're actually doing a good job by saving light for one hour, and thus setting the bar really low.

"Don't despair! We can save this doomed world by turning off the light for an hour! That'll help!"

Chula Vista 03-26-2015 03:27 PM

Plus I can see Hannity making huge fun of it on his show for being so lame.

That'd be a nice break from him unintentionally making fun of himself on his show for being so lame.

Because it's stupid as ****, and yet some idiots think it matters. Gotta hate the idiots.

DwnWthVwls 03-26-2015 04:30 PM

I see this is a way to spread awareness more than a "look, i'm doing my part".

Chula Vista 03-26-2015 04:40 PM

I'm going to start a National "Turn Off the Light When Leaving a Room" movement.

Let's say you have 3 people living in your home and each of them saves 15 minutes of electricity a day just by turning off the light when leaving a room - even if it's for only a few minutes at a time.

3 x 15 minutes = 45 minutes x 365 days = 16,425 = 274 hours a year.

Earth Hour? Phffffft.

Well, there are a LOT of people in China and India who are packed pretty close together, so I imagine if you were gonna help global warming by reducing population, then those would be the places to do it, especially since you'd have to use a smaller amount of nukes to achieve the same drop in population.

DwnWthVwls 03-26-2015 08:16 PM

yea, and taking china and india out would most likely collapse the world economy, meaning even more worldwide would die or be cast into poverty

Frownland 03-26-2015 08:24 PM

Dude, what if we launched our garbage into space?

John Wilkes Booth 03-26-2015 08:27 PM

that sounds expensive. we should just select a weak country like canada or something and force them to take it.
