too much YouTube IMO

For what it's worth I dislike opening a thread to find the new post is a YouTube clip. As a general rule, I come on here to read. I'll find the music on my own, thank you. If you do link to YouTube a description of exactly what it is would be nice. I'm not interested in surprises. Thanks.

You have a fair point.

I'm sorry, I forgot that we were all catering to your needs and interests. I'll make sure to think about what you want before posting anything on the forum.

You obviously didn't catch my sarcasm. I'm not going to hold back on Youtube videos just because you don't like it. If you can't handle what people do at this forum, then this forum isn't for you. This is actually the first time i've ever seen someone complain about it and frankly it's not going to do anything. People post videos usually as a way to add commentary to a topic that they don't have the words to do so.

It is actually cool when there's also a short description and not just a lonesome YT vid.

I don't see much point in it though. If the video covers what I want to cover through words, just watch the video, its not that hard.

OccultHawk 08-03-2015 11:14 AM

After a 90% disappointment rate on blind YouTube clicks nobody will ever see the vids. It's like bumping a thread just to add an emoji, an in invisible emoji even.

If this is your logic, polls should be taken away as well.

OccultHawk 08-03-2015 11:19 AM

I answer polls and look at the results.

I actually do think it's overkill for a new vote to bump the whole thread, however.

Aux-In 08-03-2015 11:30 AM

I'm big on letting the viewer come up with their own interpretation of the video/music without the need for me to add unnecessary commentary in order to sway their opinion of it. Interpretive art is a form of this. I still write when I have something valuable to add other than just "great song."

OccultHawk 08-03-2015 12:08 PM

To everybody who will and has already responded to this thread with a blind YouTube link -

You're real clever. Good stuff!

Well a thread as clever and interesting as this deserves a similarly clever and interesting response.

I think it's inherently wrong to try to push people to post in a way you want. I'm not mad about all the GIFs used in replies, though I often use them myself. Really, it comes down to the fact that nobody can tell anyone else how to post. A lot of people don't like my walls of text, or my dad jokes: doesn't mean I'm going to stop using them. As Ki says, this isn't a forum for one person and you are in point of fact the only one who seems to have a problem with this so I'd suggest maybe just sucking it up. There are lots of things here I don't like, but people aren't going to change them just because I don't like them.

DwnWthVwls 08-03-2015 01:49 PM

i dont think a description is necessary but typing out the name of the video or artist-song name goes a long way in keeping posts relevant after the video is blocked/removed.

That's your preference and I honestly get it when I think about certain threads but if you think I'm going into "What Are You Listening To II" and not being happy there are YT videos, then you're out of your mind.

Nothing I hate more than seeing...

The Pubes - Hairy Forest

...and no video to go along with it. I don't usually have YT opened in a tab so I have to go an do that just to hear a song. F*ck that. Your opinion can be valid in sorts, but it's picky as hell and really didn't deserve its own thread. People are debating though so I guess have at it.

Janszoon 08-03-2015 02:35 PM

When I'm on my phone, YouTube videos don't show up. So I'm definitely a fan of some explanation. Also, even when I'm on a computer I don't just go around clicking every YouTube video anyone posts, I need some reason to check it out. Some kind of comment about it goes a long way toward piquing my interest.

I like the music reviews, the discussion, and the banter on here too. But what I like more, much more, is listening to music. A great artist that I've never heard before in a youtube vid post is worth more to me than a hundred articulate reviews or intelligent music discussions.

^ agree
When I'm using my tablet, instead of PC, it really helps if there wad a band/song title (or movie clip title) that I could to look it up if I wanted to.

grindy 08-04-2015 05:44 AM

Half the time I visit MB from work, where YT is blocked.
I'm obviously not saying everybody should change how they post because of me (**** me), but it's the main reason I agree with OH's opinion.

This. If I want to watch a video someone posts when I'm on mobile, I have to quote the post and type in the link.

rockeur 08-04-2015 07:10 AM

Well,

What is wrong with it?

For example, I have a new video! Whats wrong if I post it here?

If you dont like it, just ignore it:)

You might get banned for self-promotion and your post deleted.

By now i have a general idea of the music taste ppl have around here so i don't really need a description for every vid they post although sometimes seeing a short simple description on why they like it can motivate me to watch it too.

I'll tell ya what i do dislike, i dislike half assed OP for threads that only have a youtube video to explain the damn thread, that or when the OP feels lazily written and vague.

Pretty sure I'm guilty of this when I make threads about specific artists. I agree with you, I'm just a hypocrite.

It's not i expect a big ass text wall to explain the subject of the thread but i do expect the thread maker to put a little effort into the OP.

A well written OP sets the tone for the thread imo.
even if ppl here derail it with their hilarious off topic banter if you write a good OP someone is bound to take it seriously and put the thread back on track.

in my case the reason you should check it out is cause i posted it.

The Batlord 08-05-2015 10:08 PM

I'm not reading all that ****, but I'll just say that there are five million and one Youtube videos on this site, and I am not going to click on all of them. If they're part of a review, then great. If they're the entire content of a post, then **** off. I need some context about what the **** it is I'm about to click on, or I'm probably just wasting my time. It's why I always try to write something, even if only a sentence, when posting in a "What Are You Listening To?" thread.

John Wilkes Booth 08-05-2015 10:27 PM

i like how needy you guys are

"post the way i want you to post or else i won't watch your video!"

is that a threat, comrade? you only deprive yourself of jwb wisdom in doing so. indeed, you are like a deluded and unhygienic hippy indulging in a hunger strike against corporate greed in a walmart parking lot, all while the rest of america's one-stop-shoppers walk by eyeing you with disgust and contempt, mistaking you for a smelly homeless person.

personally, i can assess whether i want to watch any youtube video by reading the title and looking at the thumbnail. sometimes (rarely) i misjudge, but then i quickly realize my error within 15 seconds of clicking play. because i am better than you

The Batlord 08-05-2015 10:35 PM

We're not talking about your hour-long Trump videos (I assume). I already know what those are about and whether or not I want to watch them. But when it's some random band's random song, and I have no idea what either of them are, then I skip.

You're prolly missing out on a lot of good music if you're not clicking links in that thread just because people didn't write a sentence about the song they post.

Knowing this site, I'm probably missing out on a lot of boring indie.
