Didnt realize liking Linkin Park was a death sentence here. I should've known, really. I've been here a while.

All nu metal bands got you crucified for mentioning them in the past. MB is a cruel mistress of pretentious assholes |

Linkin Park is definitely better than a lot of nu metal contemporaries. But System of a Down is better than them all, even if they weren't ever really a nu-metal band.

First time I ever heard Linkin Park was last time in the Album Club. Loved the album. I suppose that gives them the kiss of death then: Trollheart likes you = you suck?

It's all good though. If people don't wanna listen to good music, that's on them. I think I rarely talk about LP for the same reason which is probably why you didn't know I liked them. I enjoy Meteora the most as you know. |
Linkin Park has some cringe moments in their early videos and the way they made some songs. Lots of bands have cringe material on how time moves on and styles change. But Linkin Park evolved with the times, they moved on to Minutes To Midnight which was NOT cringe in 2007 and it was good music. Then with Living Things, they moved towards an electronic dubstep sound in 2012 (because dubstep was popular at that time = not cringe). They went further into dubstep with their remix album called (Recharged), it's still to this day 10 years later an amazing album.
Then in 2014 the band went backward and created a really good rock-sounding album sort of back to heavy songs (The Hunting Party). Nothing cringe about The Hunting Party album still. But then comes the part where I DO think the band is a total cringe-fest with their latest album that was pop-sounding in 2017 (One more light), that album sucked a lot. I still listen to the band a lot. In 2023 more than in other years because I have been sort of finding what bands I am going to listen to and like for the remaining years of my life and Linkin Park is one of them since I grew up jamming to their songs. https://boxden.com/smilies/Qh2Vxfi.gif |

Trollheart hates you (Beastie Boys) = you good  |
I will add that nostalgia definitely adds to why i still like / listen to them.

If we're talking videos, I'll throw Shadow of the Day in there. Not cringey or anything, but I really like the video and how it's shot.

Isn't that song about the Virgina Tech shooter? Or is my memory failing me?

Where does NIN fall on the nu metal spectrum?
|
NIN predate nu-metal by at least half a decade, I'd say industrial metal if I had to class them as metal at all. Were definitely influential on a lot of nu-metal bands though.
And I still love Korn honestly. They were my first "favorite band" back in 1999. |

Yeah I definitely wouldn't classify NIN as nu metal. Great band though.
I think the most obvious influence on nu metal as a genre was Faith No More. The biggest thing that's kept me coming back to a band like System of a Down more frequently than bands like Korn and Linkin Park beyond just generally writing better songs is that they knew how to have fun. |
I think Korn had plenty of fun, not quite as irreverent as SOAD but they had the scat screaming, bagpipe parts, their cover of Ice Cube's Wicked, a lot of pretty whacked stuff especially for the mid-90s.
And yeah, Faith No More were definitely a huge catalyst for nu-metal as a whole. Helmet too. But there was a specific subsection of industrial influenced nu-metal as well, like Orgy, Dope, Static-X, etc. I guess this is the day Synthgirl outs herself as a nu-metal kid, haha. I was into that stuff in middle school over 20 years ago so there's a good deal of nostalgia there. |
Orgy were basically 90s metal Depeche Mode and were great.
|
The closest I get to nu metal is 90s industrial alternative rock and industrial techno. Stabbing Westward, Gravity Kills, a bit of God Lives Underwater... so many bands which were tragically tagged as "the poor-man's NIN." Also just about anything on Wax Trax! Records / TVT. That includes NIN, Aphex Twin, KMFDM, 1000 Homo DJs, My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult, Sister Machine Gun, Ministry, Revolting C*cks, VNV Nation, Coil, Front Line Assembly, Meat Beat Manifesto, Psychic TV, The KLF, and my beloved Underworld.
Wax Trax! Records was a fundamental part of my high school experience. |
