My bike commute used to be about 40 mins there and 40 mins back. Plus I was doing two trips a day: one round trip in the morning and ditto in the afternoon. That was the fittest I'd ever been in my life - luckily it was all on the flat, done on a light second-hand bike with no gears that cost about 15 dollars.

Sometimes the ride was the best moment of my day, many times it was just a slog, but it was only truly depressing when it rained.

I bike two miles to work and it's a 15-minute ride, so that would be almost an hour. **** that. I'd catch the subway.

And when in the dead of winter or summer?

I used to do 40 minute trips every day and now I wonder why I ever put up with it.

I used to live five minutes from work, but then I bought a house, and that house was worth the longer bike ride.

Is the subway really that abhorrent?

Why ride the train and bus when I can pocket the $200 a month transportation stipend as well as get some sunshine and exercise? (On rainy days, of course, I take public transportation.)

I'd think you'd jump at the chance to molest Japanese school girls in a crowded train.

^ Down here the dead of winter means changing to a long-sleeved shirt for two weeks, then back to short sleeves for the rest of the year.
