Nice. Finished Medium is the Massage today and thought it was it was a blast. Simultaneously entertaining and profound. The version I read was the Hardwired reissue, not sure if it deviates from the original at all. I have Understanding Media on the way now (along with a copy of Finnegans Wake, my copy had been either misplaced or permanently borrowed). I'm surprised that McLuhan's material wasn't included in my communications/journalism degree curriculum outside of secondary interpretations of the global village.

Filled up my next week with calls. Narrowly avoided two car accidents. Watched a series of YouTube videos on extremely expensive coffee. Read and responded to a random private message from someone who has been reading my reviews on music for the last 10 years here on MB and apparently it had a big impact on him (or her). I guess you just never know what that last review you did might mean to someone, even if they never reach out to you about it.

One of the first things you’ll learn is that there’s no apostrophe in Finnegans Wake. Check with me, if you want, about good online resources (and other things) on both Ulysses and the Wake. Kinda miss our monthly book club on the Wake, but we’ll probably be using Zoom next month. The common order is Ulysses first, but there’s no reason to follow the common. Also, there are free versions online of both. It helps to read the Wake out loud too - or hear someone else read it - preferably someone Irish. It takes some devotion to wordplay like no other text.

Ja, I've spent a good deal of time with the Wake but all in all have only really read the first 100ish pages straight through along with various sections that I've either been told about or randomly flipped to. Wolves in Sheepskin spent a lot of time reading it aloud when we were recording Knuckle in the Mud and Lizard of Ox, Joyce is hilarious.

It’s best to not start the book at the beginning. A good place is
at Book I, Chapter 5 (otherwise known as the “Mamafesta”).
You won’t “miss” anything by starting there, because, like Vico,
it’s cyclical.
