Did you know that stop signs with white borders are optional?

Alright, go on: what's the wacky Irish definition for yuppy?

No, we had yuppies in the eighties, but they're gone now. That whole term is no longer in use. I'm sure they're still here in some other guise, but nobody would ever refer to anyone as a yuppie. It's now very much an outdated concept.

You ever heard of the Celtic Tiger?

Last night was a friend and my realization of our plan to upgrade my server.

We had all the hardware lined up to complete the project at no cost.
...or so we thought.

After replacing the motherboard we realized that the more modern hardware would not support my old VGA display.

So we hopped in the car and hiked to the store for a DVI-to-VGA adapter.

But when it failed to power up we discovered that we'd need a beefier power supply.

So we hopped in the car and hiked to the store for a 600w supply.

But when we connected it we discovered that the original case fan would not work with new hardware.

So we hopped in the car and hiked to the store for a 120mm case fan.

But when we finally powered it up we had no display. Apparently, the DVI adapter wasn't sufficient.

So we hopped in the car and hiked to the store for a DVI cable.

But when we connected the DVI cable we still had no display.

So we disconnected everything and rebuilt the original PC.

But found we STILL had no display!

So we grappled with the monitor for a bit and inadvertently spilled crazy glue all over the screen. (Don't ask.)

So we're pretty sure the new video card is bad and will have to order another, (with VGA support).

And replace my monitor.

Which means we can hop in the car and return the DVI adapter.

And return the DVI cable.

And apparently my air conditioner was feeling a bit left out of the mess, so, unbeknownst to us, it spent the entire night spewing water and left my Chromebook soaking in a pool of liquid.

But we've temporarily substituted a third PC, which worked with the monitor.

I installed Linux and manually reconstructed all my custom configurations on the temporary PC.

And just when I thought I might get some sleep, I switched from the native Unity desktop environment to the unsupported Gnome classic.

...which corrupted the entire system rendering it unbootable.

So after a few more hours, I've finally got 90% of my server operational. Save for the embarrassment of Unity.

And having a monitor completely covered in superglue.

And in a bizarre turn of events, the evening following the entire ordeal, I walked into the dining room and noticed an extra new monitor and working PC sitting off in a corner untouched.

That last bit hurt a little.

Yuppies are dead. Get used to it. Or is it just that you Americans are, as usual, behind the rest of the world?

By no coincidence it was in the early 1980s that the term "yuppie" was coined. That word is not much used now, because the phenomenon it describes is so taken for granted, but at the time it was a label for something novel. Yuppies were young professionals who made lots of money. To someone in their twenties today, this wouldn't seem worth naming. Why wouldn't young professionals make lots of money? But until the 1980s being underpaid early in your career was part of what it meant to be a professional. Young professionals were paying their dues, working their way up the ladder. The rewards would come later. What was novel about yuppies was that they wanted market price for the work they were doing now.[5]
