Were you (or are you) popular/unpopular in school?

What was it like for you in school? Were you a nerd hunted by jocks, or a jock kicking nerds out of your way? Or did you plot a careful course between both, trying to stay on the sidelines? Were you, or are you, popular or unpopular at school, and how, if at all, have you changed since then?

Big surprise I know, but I was a nerd. Being skinny, wearing glasses and not knowing one side of a soccer pitch from another, I was stuck with my own little group of like-minded friends, and also being something of a swot, was not exactly bullied but laughed at and excluded from the "gang" and "cliques" that form in school, and a target of ridicule always. The fact that I sucked at PT (PE to you guys) did not help. Man I hated school.

Cuthbert 01-23-2016 12:56 PM

In primary school, I was a bit of a geek. In secondary school I was a really good athlete & sprinter, really good at most sports. Football was banned at my school though, you could only play basketball, I don't know why. I wasn't part of the 'cliques' as you put it but not exactly picked on either. I knew most of the popular lads to say alright to and had friends from all circles. Probably helped that most of my friends were 2/3 years older and lived on the same road and were popular in their school years so I just stayed with them.

Was OK tbh.

Pet_Sounds 01-23-2016 01:17 PM

I'm not popular by any stretch of the word, but I'm certainly not unpopular either. I have a small number of friends, all of whom I'm very close with. People seem to get that I'm happy doing my own thing most of the time. I set a record in track last year and my popularity soared to an uncomfortable level for about fifteen minutes. :D

Paul Smeenus 01-23-2016 01:23 PM

I was incredibly unpopular in school, so absolutely nothing has changes.

Frownland 01-23-2016 01:29 PM

I had a lot of friendly acquaintances in high school because I may or may not have distributed drugs throughout the school. I had a group of 10ish people who I regularly hung out with.

ChelseaDagger 01-23-2016 01:46 PM

I was the kid who used to start uniquely absurd rumors about myself for the sheer amusement of watching them circulate  I went to a small school where fading into the background was unfortunately not an option, but I dare say that I graduated as the simultaneously most-hated and most-loved individual in my graduating class... Not sure if that's considered being popular or unpopular?

Edit: would also like to add that I was an avid nose-picker, and had the most athletic flicking finger in the whole school, if I do say so myself *blush*

The Batlord 01-23-2016 01:55 PM

The **** do you think? I was the worst kind of nerd: the angry nerd. So I was awkward, weird, and in general had no qualities that kids around me wanted anything to do with. On the other hand, I had a big mouth and an elephant-sized chip on my shoulder, so any bullying I suffered I made exponentially worse by mouthing off to people I had no business antagonizing.

I continued in this way up till my last two years of school, which I spent in a military boarding school with 150 delinquents with personality disorders, where I had to learn to keep my mouth shut for the sake of my own survival (I once witnessed my roommate get a knife pulled on him, so I'm only kind of exaggerating). I was only moderately successful, so while I didn't die, I didn't have a whole lot of friends either.

I played a lot of sports growing up and when that ended when I got into High School and started listening to music, I was still able to retain that clique that maintained their jock speed. I also lived on the same street and grew up with the most popular kid in school that was one of the best running backs in the state when he played footy. I got into bands and went through a punk phase where I eventually met my five best friends who I still hang out with multiple times a week. I was basically the kid that got along with everybody in the school. I wasn't particularly nice. I have a tendency to be very sarcastic and short with people, but I made up for it in other ways. I drove people home when I didn't feel like getting drunk or high. When I did decide to get f*cked up, I was a blast to be around because I'm a notorious fun drunk.

So to answer the question, I wasn't really "popular", but was able to build and maintain a sh*tload of relationships that still last. I only hang out with my best friends, but going back to my home town and seeing people at the local bar is always a pleasant experience. I know a lot of people whom I could crash on their couch if I ever find myself in that part of the country.

Janszoon 01-23-2016 03:26 PM

I was popular I guess. I got along with everyone. My high school didn't really fit into the whole stereotypical cliquish thing though, people were pretty low-key.

What's the point of using "whom" if you're not going to use it even vaguely correctly?

"I know a lot of people whose couch I could crash on..."

... or if you want to be pretentious...

"I know a lot of people on whose couch I could crash... "

And yes, I realize that there should be a space before an ellipsis, but it's a personal choice, because I just think it looks better without the space, though I do employ one after an ellipsis.

Exo 01-23-2016 03:30 PM

I sometimes use words incorrectly. You don't have to get so facetious about it.

Batty is a well-known employer of spaces. More than one has gone on to great things thanks to his patronage and guidance. God bless him.

High school was hell. I was majorly depressed by the time I got through that ****.

I guess I'm somewhere in the middle, I don't really like to draw attention to myself that often seeing as I'm not good with talking to people. Overall I have quite a few friends and no one hates me, so I guess it's cool.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 01-23-2016 04:29 PM

I'm the most popular kid in my school. Captain and quarterback of the football team, last season I threw 79 touchdowns btw. I guess it can be pretty stressful though when so many girls are always fighting over you.

I'm alright I guess.

Just trying to help.

I moved multiple times and things typically change when that happens. I was pretty universally liked at the school I went to from 6 through 9th grade. The high school I went to from 10th through graduation was much, much bigger so I was kind of invisible to a lot of people there although I did end up gathering a very close group of friends.

Why is this such a hot topic for people? All you're doing is feeding into bull**** sensationalization of youth. Who ****ing cares.

...on the flipside who ****ing cares if people want to discuss their pasts? Pretty sure we're all talking about pretty major parts of our respective lives and its been interesting to read especially in cases of the members here I like

True. I just think the tone of the OP reads like a trope for every teen movie ever. It's silly. I didn't actually read past that.

^ Yes, I agree. It's a great idea for a thread.
Most of us enjoy glancing back at our pasts, and even WD, despite the protests couldn't resist doing it.
I think the pleasure is threefold:-
i) fond nostalgia for many of us
ii)"The child is father to the man" so it's intriguing to think about who we were, and how that led us to who we are
iii) imagining the MB adults as our class companions, running around the playground, as I once did, in baggy grey shorts is too amusing to resist !

I just like talking about myself. Even if I'm describing when I was a socially unacceptable vagina who even people on this site would never tolerate.
