Pet_Sounds 03-18-2017 10:52 AM

I destroyed several cassettes when I was too young to realize what I was doing.

Cassettes were still in use at that time???????

Next you're going to tell me that you know how significant a matchbook is to an 8-track tape.

I used cassettes all the time as a kid. I remember audiobooks used to be on there too for the longest time (like mid 2000's).

Actually, there are a lot more cassette releases these days than you realize.
Quite a few independent releases are cassette-only. Yeah, the sales are only
around 200,000/yr, but they're still a thing.

I've seen a lot of those around lately, now that I think about it. Most of the record stores around here even have sections of the store dedicated to the format (and lots to choose from).

It's sad that he's going die because that nurse has no pencil on the tray.

And he'll lose an eye if she does.

Judging by the fed-up look on their faces I don't think they give a shit anyway.

I was delighted when I got my first CD player, cassettes were too much pain and hassle.

Trollheart 03-18-2017 01:12 PM

I think they're just trying to wind him up.
Is someone taping this?
Also, I must ask, who is the leader there?

They were my parents' old ones. We used to get audiobooks from the library too. I almost wrecked one of them.

Must have been a reel page turner.

Frownland 03-19-2017 10:53 AM

Probably another ten or twenty years before it could be used as an "age test". This being a music forum throws the curve too.

I'm 17 and I get it, where's my medal

CDs have been around for 35 years and iPods for 16. By 2001 cassettes only accounted for 4% of all music media sales mainly because major labels stopped using the format.

Mike just turned 28 and he's never used a cassette to the best of my knowledge. I'm seriously surprised how many of you <25 year olds are familiar enough with them to get the joke.

Color me wrong in regard to the MB crowd.

Frownland 03-19-2017 12:26 PM

I borrowed a lot from my dad as a kid. My mate also has a lot of cassettes for his car. I got him Naked City's Torture Garden right before he got his DUI and couldn't drive for a year.

I also used to run a side business converting tapes and home video VHS tapes to mp3 and DVD formats for preservation purposes. So on top of that I probably know all the VHS knowledge you could throw at me.

Cuthbert 03-19-2017 12:30 PM

The cassette meme is all over the internet. Even if I was a teenager I'd have got the joke as I've seen it posted so many times.

Other forms of audio were out by 2001 but that doesn't mean people could afford them.

VHS? Pfffft.

Talk to me about Beta. :p:

The Batlord 03-19-2017 12:36 PM

Yeah, VHS is hardly an age test. That **** was still going on well into the 2000s.

Just sayin, since you seem to have a very limited idea of what knowledge millennials actual have on such "outdated" formats.

Trollheart 03-19-2017 01:10 PM

How long before kids look at this and say "but how do you make a call on it?"

I had one in my room. Didn't work, but it was fun.

The Batlord 03-19-2017 01:20 PM

I probably haven't used one of those in two decades at least. I'd probably look at it for a second to make sure I remember how to use it before I tried, cause you'd probably look like a huge idiot fumbling around with one of those things.

Giggity.

I miss these! Though, granted those made it difficult if you're the type who paces the house wildly when on the phone.

Chula Vista 03-19-2017 01:29 PM

Re: Phones

I remember when you only had to dial 5 numbers to make a call. People were so pissed when they increased it to 7.
