i think the biggest problem i noticed is that you get so drunk that somehow you just end up in yer car without realizing it, and start driving. i think a good rule of thumb is, if you cant walk straight, then you probably cant drive straight

I don't care how drunk a person is, they should be smart enough to arrange for a driver or a cab before they even go out, so that there's not even a chance of getting behind the wheel. They need to make the punishment for that way more harsh. If I were to set the punishment, it would be get your liscence suspended for the rest of your life, and serve time in jail, depending on if you crashed or injured or killed another person.

^ they already take away yer license in most places, and make you complete AA type courses, sometimes community service. that is enough hassle as is. I dont think jailtime is either appropriate or going to deter people from doing this. my solution is that they have better transits/transportation services near the downtown/bar areas. or like they do now, have police waiting out near bars after 1:30 to catch the drunks before they go too far.

the thing is, they take your liscence away temporarily, I'm saying it should be more like you drink and drive once, you're never allowed to drive again, period. The police service outside the bars is a really good idea, but there's nothing like that where I live, only the occasional checkstops out on the road, and while they do help, they aren't sufficient. I think they just need to make the penalties harsh enough that people simply wont take the risk of doing it.

^i dont know about calgary, but in the US it's a big deal to be able to drive. only select big cities have good busing/taxi systems to make car ownership unnecessary. but everywhere else, its a big deal. i almost got my license taken away for just 3 months for having a blunt roach (and i wasnt even driving), and i got scared of that. i think first time offenders in most misdemeanor crimes should get a "light" sentence. but, 2nd and 3rd time offenders should be given harsher punishment.

^that's exactly the problem, most people don't consider drinking and driving to be all that big of a deal. It's labeled as a misdemeanor crime, so people regard it as just an inconvenience they have to deal with if they get caught, which couldn't be further from the truth. I'd like to see any of these first tim offenders actually see one of their best friends dead in a hospital bed after being hit by a drunk driver. I wonder if they'd think they deserve a "light" sentece after they see his mom passed out after being told her only son was killed. Or how about going to his funeral, and just breaking down completely and sobbing so hard you can't even stand up. I wonder what they would say when 50 people go up to them asking why they haven't been in school for the past week, knowing there's no possible way to explain how much pain can be caused in a single second. I've been through that, which is why I'll never, ever agree that first time offenders should get any lighter a sentence than the second or third time offenders. The guy who killed one of my best friends was a first time offender. I wonder if anyone could look his parents, or me and my friends in the eye after that and exaplain why first time offenders should be let off with a slap on the wrist.
