killing someone while drunk driving is involuntary manslaughter, and that is not treated lightly.
i guess its hard to say. someone who swerves a little and gets pulled over shouldnt lose their license forever. but someone who hits another person or car and kills someone should be severely punished. i guess it depends case by case.

^ ok, so let's say somone drives drunk, get's caught. He has his liscence suspended for a few months, goes to AA meetings, after a while, he gets his liscence back, considers it a huge hassle, but since he can drive again, he's feeling pretty good. He goes out and has too much to drink, figures he can drive, the chances of getting caught again are pretty slim, and on the way home, runs a red light and kills someone. That wouldn't have happened if the drivers liscence had been taken away forever after his first offense. And the guy who "swerves a little", who's to say that if the cops hadn't caugh him when he did he wouldn't have run a red light and t-boned another car? Most people don't consider drunk driving all that big a deal, and your post is a perfect example of that. "Oh i'm just swerving a bit, it's not gonna hurt anyone, I'm still fine." yeah, a little swerving never hurt anyone. I read the accident report from when my friend was killed. The driver swerved into the other lane, and to avoid hitting a car in that lane, accelerated into the intersection, and hit my friend's car.

Well over here taking away someones driving licence very rarely means they actually stop driving.

dont get me wrong jib, i exactly understand what youre saying. but, dont you think it is still harsh to swip someones license away forever for all cases? if you blow numbers in their breathilizer, then you're given the DWI. but, what about those who pass the sobriety test? i would think if someone can pass that then they are okay to drive, regardless of how much they drank. but anyway, i think the best solution is to harshen the punishments, but not go too extreme.

^ yeah, if they pass the sobriety test, then fine, i have no problem with that. It also depends where you live, like here the laws aren't that harsh, at all, and they don't have a great system for catching drunk drivers. I think that the police outside bars would go a long way, the most we have is checkstops, but they usually only have those durring christmas and new years, so durring the rest of the year there's basically nothing extra besides the regular patrols.

yeah they have the checkpoints here too during holidays. but, its not as effective- considering they pull aside people randomly (i thnk like 1 in every 3 cars) and most people know about them and will use alternate routs. my friend coincendentally just got a dwi two nights ago, originally pulled over for speeding. im sure he'll get off "light" as in he wont lose his license probably at all, but since it was on the freeway he'll probably pay a pretty large fine
