The Flu 2018

The talk I'm hearing about this year's flu epidemic is scaring the buhjesus outta me, esp. since I'm shut in with about 65 or so seniors. I'm hearing this is a particularly nasty flu bug, what have you guys heard in your area?

Stephen 01-19-2018 07:39 AM

Strain we had in Aus was pretty bad last year. One guy at work is still coughing 4 months later.

Frownland 01-19-2018 07:41 AM

I think we've had around 150 deaths from it in SD.

Cuthbert 01-19-2018 08:12 AM

Bad innit.

I had it, been about two weeks, the first couple days were the worst. Took Ibuprofen and Paracetamol for those days then was OK. Just a cough and blocked nose now.

Those first two days were horrific though.

Exo 01-19-2018 08:33 AM

I've never had the flu and I've never had the flu shot. I rarely get sick and when I do, my body fights that **** off in 24 hours. I've woken up vomiting a few times over the last three years where I was achy and feverish and in 24 hours it's gone. Very strange.

Tune in next week when Exo dies of the flu.

I rarely get ill either but trust me this flu is not nice Exo mate. Nothing you can do once it infects you. I thought I was invincible as well.

Trollheart 01-19-2018 09:10 AM

Both Karen and I get the flu shot every year, though I hear tell this new strain is resistant to the current vaccination. Heard also that some teenager died of it over here. Consequently, every time Karen tells me she's feeling sick I worry, but so far nothing. Fingers crossed: if she got this in her immune-weakened state, well, it could be the end. Which reminds me: I should ring her doctor for advice.

Edit: Damn! Busy....

rubber soul 01-19-2018 09:14 AM

I've never had the flu shot either. I figured why get the flu for taking a flu shot. I explained that to my new doctor and she was like," that's your body fighting off the dead virus.". Um, yeah, by making me sick.

No. If you get the flu after the flu shot it either means that you caught a different strain or you already had it. It's a dead virus, you absolutely cannot get infected from it. **** outta here.

Frownland 01-19-2018 09:39 AM

Bitches just want a weak excuse to avoid getting poked.

Trollheart 01-19-2018 09:42 AM

All I can say is that I've been getting the shot for the last maybe four years and I have yet to catch the flu. So I guess it works for me. And for Karen, who has successfully avoided it so far. I honestly don't get why some of her carers don't get the shot; I mean, if you're dealing with, touching, washing, cleaning, in some cases (though not ours) feeding people who are at high risk of getting the flu, why wouldn't you spend the twenty quid and get the damn shot? Why aren't you required to by your company? What's the point in me getting it, Karen getting it and then her catching it from some carer? Or am I being stupid? If she's vaccinated, is she then proof against if from anyone coming in contact with her?

Please google how flu shots and vaccines in general work. Thanks.

I don't get the flu shot because I'm lazy and I hate myself, not because I don't know how modern medicine/science works.

They should be. If it were my company I would make that a fireable offense.

There's a window where you can still get infected, but once the vaccine is effective (1-2 weeks), your body is immune from those specific viruses (hence the term immunization). As you probably know, there are always multiple strains of the flu, so there is the possibility that you can still catch an alternative strain of flu from what you were immunized from.

rubber soul 01-19-2018 09:49 AM

I just know people have gotten sick after taking a flu shot. I've got nothing against vaccines in general in case people are thinking I'm some sort of Jenny McCarthy nut case. I just don't trust flu shots.

BTW, I've never gotten a severe case of the flu either and I'm 56.

Never had a flu shot, get the flu probably once a year. I get sick all the time though, hazards of the job I guess. Plus I too am lazy and hate myself so tbh my immune system is always at a disadvantage.

My problem is that my body likes itself. My brain is like the dude who lives upstairs from five bros who love each other.

"Dude, you're so awesome."

"NO. You're awesome."

"Bro."

"I know bro. Nothing will stop us. We're too awesome."

My brain is upstairs and can hear this sh*t through the vents.

"Get on my level you sh*tty good for nothing healthy bitches."

Paul Smeenus 01-19-2018 09:57 AM

The part that worries me is that 3 times a day I'm having a meal with a room full of seniors, all it takes is one of them getting sick to spread this damn bug like wildfire.

Lol. For me it's more like that time I lived with 4 perpetually drunk girls in a two bedroom apartment.

"Um can you do something about this mess pls, k thanksssss."

"You still owe me $20 from when your card got declined at target."

"Sorry I can't pay rent until the end of the month, can you cover me?"

I forgot where I was going with this.

I only distrust the flu vaccine. I'm not trying to get the damn thing banned and I'm vaccinated for everything else including small pox.

So can I assume you're in medical school? You seem to know more about vaccines than Jonas Salk.

Nope, post-grad advertising major. I'm just passionate about journalism and science.

Same tbh. It's good for babies and the elderly and people with otherwise compromised immune systems but I don't need it. I have had jobs try to tell me it's mandatory and I'm just like lol nah.

You should if you're working with kids. People who care for the young or old can infect them without showing any symptoms.

Maajo 01-19-2018 10:44 AM

I haven't hardly been sick over the last three years, but I had some awful virus (probably the flu?) right about at the start of that span. I had to bring a bucket to the ****ter because, well, yeah. One thing you need to know - have lots of ****ing water and also GINGER BEER. ****, that ginger beer was a lifesaver, I used WBC Ginger Beer (it tastes delicious too) and while Pepto Bismol didn't do ****, the ginger beer completely stopped the two major problems associated with a stomach virus. Basically, I was ****ting and puking my guts every 10 minutes, but taking a sip of ginger beer every 20-30 minutes completely stopped that. Try it if you don't believe me, the **** works like magic, yo.

Why is that anecdotal if it's actually happening to us? It's not like "we know a guy who says". Sure, I'm "that guy" in this situation, so you don't have to believe me, but what I'm saying is that my own first-hand evidence is that it does work. For us.

Spoke to Karen's doctor today and she said that as we have been getting immunised for the last few years, we are likely to have built up more of a tolerance to the new strain than people who are only starting to get the jab this year. We're not immune - nobody really is - but we're higher up on the immunity ladder, as it were.

When they jab me they say you need to stay in the pharmacy for about 15 minutes, as you might feel dizzy or sick, but after that you should be ok. Of course there is always the possibility of side effects, but that's on a case by case basis.

Unless it's a part of an overall trend, your (or anyone's) first hand experience is anecdotal evidence 100% of the time. I don't think you're lying or embellishing or anything, it's just unscientific and subjects such as these warrant a scientific approach.
