^ This raises a really good point about perception.

As MLM knows, when you are in England, you invariably talk about Europe as if it's a different place:-
- I went to Europe for my holiday last year.
- I met some guy from Europe...

And in Europe, it's the same, in reverse I suppose. - I'd never buy a car from England, they're so difficult to drive in Europe.

Of course, if you're anywhere else in the world, then suddenly it's equally obvious that England is part of Europe. So the answer seems to depend on where you are when you're asked, and if you're thinking about politics or geography.

I wonder if this may be a similar kind of question: Is Hawaii part of America?

Yeah or The Continent, things happening 'on The Continent'. Describing things as 'continental'.

The language barrier has a lot to do with it I think.

Cruise through San Francisco and ask passersby if Donald Trump is their president.

I have not the slightest clue what Hawaiians think about the mainland, but we continentals just see it as America. Maybe people who live in Hawaii think differently, or maybe just native Hawaiians do, or maybe everyone just sees it as another American state the same as Minnesota. TBH it's just about literally half the world away so who the **** knows what they think? At least France can see England.

If there's any real difference I guess we see it as America's tourist destination, since it's a tropical island that doesn't require a passport or scary ideas of locals kidnapping us and holding us for ransom. For the **** real it's honestly a bizarre and possibly unprecedented situation of a completely alien geographical area that is a canon part of a country for no apparent reason, so it's kind of a weird mental thing that has been with us so long that we don't even think about it. The simple fact that it's a state populated with plenty of white people makes it a reality for us far more than Puerto Rico that's much closer but not a state and just about all brown people.

I was going to say that you'd probably get pretty mixed answers if you asked if Puerto Rico was part of the US, but that would be because Americans are ignorant so it wouldn't be a fair comparison.

I don't know if parts of Florida have different ideas, but as far as my area of the country it's a foreign nation, and the idea that it's legally connected to the US is kind of an odd afterthought we don't think about any more than we think about Mexico or Cuba or Haiti. Seriously we should just cut them loose cause what are we even doing having any say in their government when we just do not ****ing care?
