Even southerners are disgusted by how southern Alabama is. The white people are non-cultured hicks and the black people are non-cultured hicks with darker skin. Most of these people are fairly easy to deal with on a surface level, however. The aristocratic old money whites have all fled Alabama. Even the two football obsessed universities offer no reprieve from the cultural drought. Post-Jim Crow Alabama has no identity. White Alabamians are not really very racist against blacks and LGBT folks manage alright as well. You don’t even have to be religious. The only people who are really deeply discriminated against in Alabama are Asians and Hispanics. Those people are treated like ****ing **** down there.

Harper Lee was from Alabama and To Kill a Mockingbird is one of the most overrated books ever. And they tricked her into releasing a fake sequel right before she died further ****ting on her legacy.

Before moving on to other states let’s talk about music from Alabama.

Who are some of your favorite Alabamian musicians?

A man after my heart. Boo Radley is a vaguely interesting character but otherwise that novel is schlocky and dull.

El numero uno

Also, Brent Hinds from Mastodon is from Alabama and their earlier stuff is pretty sweet.

This thread needs a theme song. I elect this song:

Molly Hatchet - Gator Country

icydk: It name drops a few bands and the state (or town) they come from.

No doubt that Sun Ra easily takes the top spot.

Nea- I haven’t thought about or listened to Molly Hatchet in far too long.

If they got their start 30 years later they probably would’ve been Viking Black Metal Southern Noir
