Even southerners are disgusted by how southern Alabama is. The white people are non-cultured hicks and the black people are non-cultured hicks with darker skin. Most of these people are fairly easy to deal with on a surface level, however. The aristocratic old money whites have all fled Alabama. Even the two football obsessed universities offer no reprieve from the cultural drought. Post-Jim Crow Alabama has no identity. White Alabamians are not really very racist against blacks and LGBT folks manage alright as well. You don’t even have to be religious. The only people who are really deeply discriminated against in Alabama are Asians and Hispanics. Those people are treated like ****ing **** down there.

Harper Lee was from Alabama and To Kill a Mockingbird is one of the most overrated books ever. And they tricked her into releasing a fake sequel right before she died further ****ting on her legacy.

Before moving on to other states let’s talk about music from Alabama.

Who are some of your favorite Alabamian musicians?

A man after my heart. Boo Radley is a vaguely interesting character but otherwise that novel is schlocky and dull.

El numero uno

Also, Brent Hinds from Mastodon is from Alabama and their earlier stuff is pretty sweet.

This thread needs a theme song. I elect this song:

Molly Hatchet - Gator Country

icydk: It name drops a few bands and the state (or town) they come from.

No doubt that Sun Ra easily takes the top spot.

Nea- I haven’t thought about or listened to Molly Hatchet in far too long.

If they got their start 30 years later they probably would’ve been Viking Black Metal Southern Noir

Rest in Peace, Tom.

Note: great, great GREAT idea for a thread, Hawk. What I know about the South could be written on the back of a matchbox, set fire to, and sifting through the ashes you might maybe find the sum total of my knowledge. I look forward to being educated, and, I have no doubt, entertained, as well as surely being mildly shocked/repulsed. Bring it on!

Oh, and of course, let's not forget, my first ever time to hear of that state...

He was a ****ing clown then and he’s a clown now. Father of the blues my ass. Silly ass pop exploitation of the blues for the dip**** masses. It sucked then and it sucks now.

That’s the last thing I got to say about Alabama.

Southerners only know the alphabet when saying it backwards to a cop.

Arkansas

Arkansas has the most securely entrenched white privilege of all the southern states. Even though it’s partly Texas’ bitch it’s still southern enough to be around 80% “deep” south. Blacks in Arkansas are generally pleasant enough but, surprisingly considering where they are, the whites are pretentious and uppity. They actually think you can live your life in Arkansas and not be pathetic white trash. They have a sort of faux wannabe Santa Fe lifestyle thing that gives them a sense of superiority but in fact is really just sad. The whites in Arkansas think they’re a bit more progressive then Alabamians but in actuality blacks and LGBT and the irreligious have it worse in Arkansas.

Are there any worthwhile Arkansawyer authors or should we get straight into the music?

OccultHawk 04-03-2018 02:36 AM

Alright

I don’t give half a **** about Glen Campbell and 70s cocaine cowboy ****

His music sucks

Even the verse of this song sucks

But the chorus- the chorus on this is ****ing unforgettable

Not to mention that they're pretentious. Oh yeah, you said that. Well, they are. I mean, surely that should be pronounced "Ar-Kan-Saz"? Where the **** does "saw" come into it? They too uppity to want to be associated with Kansas?

Best Campbell song ever.

OccultHawk 04-03-2018 07:46 AM

Nice one!

Well Arkansas has some heavy hitters including Johnny Cash and Pharoah Sanders. So we might have to hang out in this pretentious Texas wannabe sweltering **** box for quite a while.

Trollheart 04-03-2018 07:50 AM

Honestly though, the first time I saw the state written I was sure that was how it was pronounced. Of course, they're not the only ones, and the British are the worst. I mean, Worcestershire is pronounced "Wor-ster-sheer"? WT actual F??? And don't get me started on Norwich, Leicester or Hertfordshire!

I mentioned her in a brief non sequitur post in Freak Fighter but a close look at her music is on the real necessary.

SmokeAndMirrors 04-03-2018 11:11 AM

Also called "The Bible Belt" and believe me, it lives up to its name, too. And I can say that, because I've lived in Florida my whole life. Played a black metal show at a bar about 7 years ago, and 3 patrol cars were parked across the street at the gas station "just in case."

I imagine people like it for tourism, but living in the South, kind of sucks. Racism, poverty, and general bigoted ****asses run everything. Plus it's hot as ****. Central Florida gets up to 110 F sometimes in July with like 90% humidity and it still doesn't rain.

One thing that there’s no shortage of in Florida is extreme metal.

Horrible place to live though.

If you’re rich enough to enjoy Miami you should have enough sense to get the **** out of there. No matter how well your AC cools.

Probably.

Nor-ich (the "w" is silent, don't ask me why)
Lester (yeah)
and
Hart-furd-sheer.

Dem crazy Brits, huh?
Why can't they have simple place names like Ballyporeen or Termonfeckin?
