Beg your Pardon?

So iv'e had the idea for a long time for a thread that exposes the differences between UK English and Americanese. In most cases you Brits make more sense in your choice of slang, but lets see just how completely we differ in the way we speak, and maybe also some other cultural differences for good measure, and just as a supplemental -Iv'e asked this question before and still haven't gotten a satisfactory answer, What, exactly, is a chav?

PhishFood 08-15-2005 09:12 PM

oh yeah that's a damn good question... I'm always hearing this stuff about Punks and Chavs fighting and other such things i dont understand....

Zygomycota 08-15-2005 09:24 PM

oooooooooh, I've naught herd of that won.

PhishFood 08-15-2005 09:54 PM

and you refuse to spell other than in synonyms(or um.... not synonym , but the otherone..... homonym?)...

I have realised that the American's say "(insert band name here) is good", whereas i would say "(insert band name here) are good"

Zygomycota 08-16-2005 10:24 AM

...oh yeah That's true.

adidasss 08-16-2005 12:49 PM

Adidasss, here's some more...scally(north west England version of chav)...divvy(dickhead)...banging(good)...top(very good).

Sneer 08-16-2005 02:53 PM

oh please. nobody in england says "oh goodness" or "plonker" or "dimwit" anymore. though we do speak english the way it should be spoken- i hate this yank ideam where "Z" is so overused its unreal, "sucks" and "blows" are used completely out of context..i could go on. and now because of your americanised ENGLISH we have stupid little girls going what proclaiming how anything that is rubbish "sucks". fools.

adidasss 08-16-2005 04:10 PM

well i assumed noone says plonker anymore but it's just a fun word.....
and why can't you just respect the differences instead of nocking them down?you can't stop a language from developing, the same situation is with spanish, mexican slang differs from spanish......

Sneer 08-16-2005 04:17 PM

i knock it down because im very very patriotic. i just dont like the way the americans speak, nice people im sure..but their version of the english language "sucks" imo

Urban Hat€monger ? 08-16-2005 05:33 PM

I do use 'sucks' but not very often

I`d much rather say 'fucking awful' , 'shite' or 'complete & utter load of bollocks.

It's okay to think like that. You're definitely right. I mean, I like the Americans, but the brits... I love the way they speak. It's somehow "eleborate" (I don't wanna sound condescending, please don't get me wrong). And their accent is just awesome... I love to listen to them.
And btw: Don't you think that "colour" looks much better than "color"?

heh. classic, delboy and rodney are timeless. I agree with ya there adidasss.

I dont know if anyone else has heard of this before, but when somebody says something, and it confuses you, the person sometimes is told to stop speaking swahealey. (dunno how its spelt)

I reckon it sounds funny, especially when complemented by offensive swear words;)

Merkaba 08-17-2005 01:41 AM

To me the american accent is slow and twangy. Nothing against americans just not a fan of the accent, kinda like Josephine's take on "colour", i prefer it with a u too.

But im not the biggest fan of the british accent eather lol, i find it pompus-ish. Fancy a pint eh? :D makes me smile nonetheless

Sneer 08-17-2005 06:39 AM

i love the way the world has this universal idea that all english people speak with a very pronounced, posh toff accent when in fact most of the bloody country doesnt have that accent at all. if you came over here and listened to some of the people..its not pretty.

pastor of muppets 08-17-2005 06:43 AM

well, australian is a mix of england and america, so were cooler...

Fenixpunk 08-17-2005 10:51 AM

there is no true american accent. It all depends on where you go, or where the person talking to you is from. People in Tennessee dont talk like people in Louisiana who dont talk like the people from New York who sound nothing like the people from Minnesota and then theres California that has every accent you can think of blended in with the beach boy slang....etc. etc. etc.

ArtistInTheAmbulance 08-17-2005 10:58 AM

English is called English for a reason. Its not called American now, is it... So quit making fun of the way we spell colour :(

Still, pretty much all accents are the sex... 'Part from our accent, which sucks.

Some of your dialects are sexier than others. Still Iv'e always found english accents to be sexy.

adidasss 08-17-2005 02:13 PM

what, even cokney?!

Urban Hat€monger ? 08-17-2005 02:20 PM

I`ve never really given having an english accent much thought.

Unless i`ve got some hot American girl saying how sexy it is

:cough:

adidasss 08-17-2005 02:36 PM

oh for gods sake!!!

Urban Hat€monger ? 08-17-2005 02:41 PM

You`re just jealous chicks don`t go for that garbled eastern european mess that comes out of your gob.

adidasss 08-17-2005 02:45 PM

actually, i speak with a thick american accent ,asshole....

blackTshirt 08-17-2005 02:54 PM

haha i'm loving this

but about the eastern european thing
i'm taking it as insult :( adidasss, i know you don't have any weird accent, cause it's the same with me :)

adidasss 08-17-2005 02:58 PM

yeah, granted, apart from my sister, i've yet to meet a croatian who speaks without an accent....even my highschool and colegge english teachers couldn't shake it....blackt, i think you have to admit that we're the exceptions to the rule.....

blackTshirt 08-17-2005 03:10 PM

hahaha it's just cause of the tv and the music

i'm sure you talk really well, you can usually notice from miles away ;)
plus your grammar is good too, so fuck the accent! which is not there anyway!
you get the point

the english accent is an oral aphrodisiac..you all know it makes sense. and colour looks much better then color..one letters difference and it could be colon..which isnt an attractive image.

SATCHMO 08-17-2005 06:53 PM

Yes, well there are more important things to worry about than how to spell Colour. (I cant look at it spelled that way without thinking Kuh-lure')
I WANNA KNOW WHAT A BLEEDING CHAV IS DAMNIT !!!!!!!! AND NO FREAKIN' HYPERLINKS!!!!!!!!!
