Birds

Are there birds where you live/work? Do you enjoy hearing birdsong or does it drive you mad? Do you feed the birds where you live/work? I used to have to go out and feed the birds that would come into our garden, just to keep Karen happy, but over the years I've actually grown to like it. It's nice to see them fluttering down after you've filled up the feeders, and yeah, birdsong is lovely. Apart from magpies, when they screech and cackle at each other in the small hours and keep you awake.

Yes there are birds where I live. Lot of crows, they're pretty brutal. A few weeks ago, there was a dove that made a nest in my backyard and we found its ravaged corpse and a bunch of crow **** in our yard. Quite a variety around here as well.

Question: does anyone live in a place without birds?

Other than pigeons, I'd say those who live in the heart of the city don't see that many. I don't know of course, but in Dublin city centre that's about all you see birdwise, pigeons and maybe the odd crow. It's nice out here, listening to starlings and sparrows and seagulls. We get the crows, magpies and plenty of pigeons too of course. I do wonder about a new bird I've been seeing a lot of, kind of mostly grey with some black. Thought it was a crow, but they're completely black, aren't they? Crows are pretty damn cool. I love the way they stare at you as if to say "Yeah? You ****ing want some?" before flying off.

Oh yeah: we're getting ducks coming up here now too, two in particular. Really fun feeding them bread, and now they seem to know me. Whereas before they would walk off and I'd have to go after them, throwing bread pieces like some demented Johnny O'Appleseed, now when they see me they come to me for the bread. Love ducks.

In college there was a bird that would hang out on the fence close to my window and it would hang out and sing to the music I was listening to. We jammed a few times.

Keep an eye out for sparrow hawks and herons. Especially herons if there are guys where you live who have ponds with fish in their gardens.
