Is there an MB Community on Reddit?

This place seems slightly dead. Wondering how we can get some new blood in here.

People join in all the time, and then they move on -- some sooner than others. I had quite a few friends I felt were chased off the boards -- so to speak. Maybe not that dramatic, but somewhere along the line it didn't work out for them. I had someone I knew from plug.dj join and he got banned almost immediately. That person was equally opinionated as any other member here, but somehow his opinions got him banned. It was within days. Perhaps there was personality conflict. I could have interceded on his behalf, but I don't to be a mediator for two locked horns. I am actually ashamed of this forum, so there was no reason I want on his behalf to get him unbanned, and have his suffer all over again. Also I don't want the responsibility of vouching for someone then they get offend by this place and suddenly has a axe to grind.

So try as I may not advertising MB I actually ended up with nine referrals. There are probably more members who have more referrals. But wow! for not trying I can't believe I got nine referrals.

If you can entice Reddit People to join good luck to you. I hope when they join get abuse by the usual suspects here you won't get that guilty feeling like you laid down some elaborate troll trap for them.

I liked reddit when you could actually see breaking news.

Raime 04-20-2020 10:24 PM

Facebook music groups are what I used to use more in my absence, until they became super bloated echo chambers. I would post a link, but I don't know how well that would go. If you want to see people constantly beg for an admin to post foot pics, join PMC. If you want to see people act like know it all idiots when all they do is listen to basic indie music, join >implying music is good.

Give it time. I came back, and it looks like others have too recently. Not sure if it's because people needed something that wasn't facebook, reddit, or 4chan, but I needed something smaller where my posts didn't get drowned in a sea of Charli XCX thirst posts.

It's just that I've always wanted to ban you and that was the closest thing to satisfaction I was going to get until you really f*ck up.

If we get a series of puns rolling and some YouTube music videos with no commentary, then you can just link this thread for an MB experience preview.

Yeah, I mean there's nothing wrong with MB, except there isn't a lot of musical discussion. I used to post new music to Facebook, but since I got off the platform about 2 years ago, there's nowhere to suggest new stuff.

And when I post things here I'm lucky to get 2 relies.

Frownland 04-22-2020 08:20 AM

That's just because you bring a rock niche that's not very often discussed on the site with your threads. Just keep chugging and the musical discussion will find you.

Exo 04-22-2020 10:18 AM

Get into jazz or metal and you're golden here.

TheBig3 04-22-2020 11:26 AM

Thanks, friends.

I comment on Rock since it's my mood currently. But I really rejoined to find new stuff. Love metal, pretty into Jazz but I wouldn't say I have a favorite group like I would with other genres.

Loved: Go Go Penguin, the Bad Plus, Gnappy, really love Acid Jazz. Metal I tend to lean toward Power Cheese. Dragonforce, Hammerfall, but I listening to Arch Enemy and Children of Bodom when they moment is right.

OccultHawk 04-22-2020 11:33 AM

I like what I’ve heard of The Bad Plus

What’s your top record by them?

One of the best compliments I saw on the boards was someone said "I can rely on you to post a video I would thoroughly enjoy. You open me up to so much new music." (not exact words but something like that.) I think it would great if someone has so much musical knowledge that people can rely on them to discover new music.

The forum in it's halcyon days was the place to be cause it was a place where someone could rely on a member to file share an album he/she was looking for. But now there are so many music services out there MB lost that aspect. Then Music Banter went into critical mode, where all you can do it to critique music -- music that could be found on other sites like YT or Spotify. Somehow I think MB is past "critical mode" and is now in "conversational lounge mode." Perhaps "critical mode" and "conversational lounge mode" existed concurrently at the same time, it's just the music critiquing has faded into the background.

"These are the Vistas" was the record that hooked me. So I'll always say that's my #1. "It's Hard" being my #2. But I tend to listen to things like Spotify Radio because I want recs and a variety. I wouldn't say I'm an album guy generally.

I believe it was you, Neo, who once made the best rec I've ever had here. "The Owl Service" by Pram and iirc you played it in plug.dj to annoy me. And since I'm annoying, I loved it.

OccultHawk 04-22-2020 12:04 PM

Do you like MMW?

I don't know what this is.

Also, looking at my Most Played on Spotify, Brad Mehldau is a big artist for me. But I get the impression that's not going to be a big hit on these forums. I keep an instrumental playlist on Spotify I tend to dump whole albums on these days and just let it spin. If you want to try the list out and see what you find, here's the link.

You know honestly I haven't given them a real shot. I had an opinion of them as a much younger man and I never got off of it. Do you have a 3-5 I should try?

I knew a guy who loved them, and I thought he was a super *******. Plus I've always associated them with the Phish crowd, right or wrong, and I just stayed away. Am willing to give up my past prejudices.

OccultHawk 04-22-2020 03:10 PM

I hate Phish but yeah they run in the jam band crowd. Why not cheat and go with a compilation just to see:

Last Chance to Dance Trance (Perhaps): Best Of (1991–1996)

If you want a studio record instead I like The Dropper and Friday Afternoon in the Universe.

I associate them with Bad Plus but I don’t really know why.

Looking through MMW’s discography I’ve only heard a fraction of it tbh

TheBig3 04-22-2020 03:53 PM

You know they aren't bad, but it has a 70's feel, like if the BTO, or the backing band for James Brown on "Hell" did a side detour. They've got some B.J. Thomas to them, a hint of steely dan.

Thoughts on Morphine?

OccultHawk 04-22-2020 04:03 PM

Saw them live once in Portland. Like almost anybody I have a positive impression of Cure for Pain

Codeine was a good band, too lol

oof @ the bolded...

The Bad Plus is indeed tight as **** though. I saw their drummer Dave King play in the Chris Speed trio and he took it to the next level.

Hammerfall are my **** and I'm pretty lukewarm on most Children of Bodom, aside from Hate Crew Deathroll which is an all-time fav album.

TheBig3 04-22-2020 05:44 PM

@Frown. Oof because of their music, or because they wrote Soldiers of the Wasteland about the posters here? Kidding.

@Bats - HCDR is the only album I own, so I guess I just meant that album.

And since I haven't mentioned it in a while, and if you haven't tried them, Moon Hooch is always a jam

Because Dragonforce are terrible and only know how to write one song. Admit it. You never make it through an entire Dragonforce album do you? Stratovarius is the cultured man's choice.

I'm not as much into the weedly weedly power metal stuff anymore so you might be more into their first three albums than I am. They're not terrible at all, they just kind of blow by me without leaving much impression much of the time. Hate Crew Deathroll has this kinda unique cock rock swagger to it that gives it more personality to me

TheBig3 04-22-2020 06:07 PM

I haven't made it through an entire DF album but honestly, I can't say that about many bands. I think the album is an artificial metric we've been told we must appreciate. But I grew up buying 18 track CDs for $23 because a marketing team said that if it has more songs they can charge more.

Albums are a conspiracy by Big Label and I refuse to accept it.

I mean ja, they're standard because of the music industry and physical limitations that are now largely irrelevant, but when an artist does incorporate the album format into their creative process it can make that **** ten times more impactful.

OccultHawk 04-22-2020 08:34 PM

I doubt I’ll ever buy another album in my life.

Same.

The Batlord 04-22-2020 08:56 PM

Yes, albums are an arbitrary restriction but so are parallelogram paintings and TV shows that are either 1 hour or 1/2 hour.

Frownland 04-22-2020 09:08 PM

Non album singles defo need more love.

WWWP 04-22-2020 09:15 PM

I love a nice single. But if I hear a new track and love it I have to hear it within the context of the album or I just feel like I haven't done my due diligence.

Raime 04-22-2020 09:29 PM

If I want to listen to a modern classical ambient it should be about the length of an album. If I want to listen to some bomb ass dance music, put that **** on a single or EP. It depends what the artist is trying to achieve, and you also have to think about listener fatigue as well.

OccultHawk 04-22-2020 09:37 PM

Often I find an artist I like but then it’s like 5 full length lps worth of music in one year and it’s a big turn off.

I don't know how to respond to that. Pram are like three parts The Flying Lizards, one part Residents, with a twist of Trip Hop, gently stirred and poured over ice usually in an old fashion glass but you could use a Tom Collins glass if you don't the former. Don't forget to garnish the drink with mint. Everything I learned about music I learned from the Old Mr. Boston book of mixed drinks.
