Cogan's Trade by George V. Higgins

It's been awhile since I've read a crime novel and I always liked the Dennis Lehane crime novels that take place there, and I've been meaning to watch Killing Them Softly so I figured this was as good a book to read as any.

I have so many good memories of reading Anne Rice's vampire novels. Lestat is one of, if not my favorite, literary character of all time. But for some reason I just never got around to reading her Mayfair witches novels. Well, I was a ****ing moron cause I'm about a hundred pages in and totally absorbed. It's mostly been flashbacks and back story so far and yet she's made it in no way dull, or let it hurt the narrative flow. She just manages to draw you in bit by bit by giving you just enough information to kind of know what's going on, but not enough that you're ever satisfied, so you're always waiting breathlessly for every little tid bit. The only bad thing is that since I've already read Blood Canticle, I already have a very general idea of what's going on, but it still manages to hook me.

This is written in (mostly) phonetic Scottish English but not as hard to read as Trainspotting, I enjoy it so far

In that vein...

I'm reading several books, all of which I enjoy, but they're pretty much all just to gain knowledge. I'm in the mood for some sort of literature that will completely pull me in and leave me dumbfounded with its greatness. Any suggestions for a really absorbing book? Most any genre is good with me, though please, nothing low-brow. I want it to be worth my time.

First of all if you have this attitude toward literature you're kind of missing the point in general.

I recommend Kafka on the Shore by Murakami

Ralph Ellison's "Invisible Man". I read that one in two days, which is unlike me since books usually take a week or two for me to devour.

Okay, yeah, that was a bit douchey for me to say. I just mean nothing... I dunno... airport-y? I don't know what I mean. I apologize.
