I didn't know there was such a bandwagon.
I just feel that a horror movie that mostly relies on them gets boring and annoying very fast, plus it just isn't as effective as psychological stuff and a cool, creepy atmosphere.

I love a good jump scare, I think Drag Me to Hell is one of the best examples of a good film with those. It's just that many films tend to rely solely on jump scares for their element of horror, so it gets easy to just see them as tired and/or unnecessary.

Yes. Comparing lens flares and jump scares is like comparing synthesizer solos to guitar solos.

It's this weird trend where genres are color coded. Horror movies seem to have a weird blue tint to them, post-apocalypse movies have a grey washed out look, movies set in desert locations have an orange tint, and ones that question reality have a green tint. It's been around for awhile but O Brother Where Art Thou used digital color correction to give it that old timey sepia tone, and other directors jumped on the technology because it was an easy way to create emotional responses in the audience without having to do any work. Also, blue and orange are on opposite ends of a color wheel so they contrast nicely.

As with jumpscares/ lens flares, they are effective tools in the filmmakers arsenal however they quickly become overused by others trying to replicate the success of a trendsetters film by the most superficial aspects.
