Bought it at the weekend. First off. I hated the washed out look of the film. really really annoyed me but I am quite picky with things like this. That's out of the way and onto the film. It was a lot more understated than I thought it would be and at times it didn't quite know whether it wanted to be a satire or a serious drama. However the cinematography was excellent and the fractured storyline was handled with aplomb. JCVD's monologue to the camera was fantastic and gave credence to my views that in his last few films he has turned in some decent performances. 7/10

The Time Machine (2002) - **

It's ok.

Guy Pierce is always good in those "well Johnny Depp wanted too much money" kind of roles, Samantha Mumba is pretty damn hot, Jeremy Irons is always awesome, and there's some decent special effects (though the murlocks look painfully fake) and interesting ideas.

But too often it just goes by the numbers, you're never given enough time to really get caught up in what's going on, just another OK science fiction film.

There are a few things that bother me, how/why is it that after millions of years, the human race has completely forgotten about previous events and how to speak english, except for one girl who speaks perfect english? And how exactly did some humans involve into murlocks, while the rest have been completely unchanged, except for being one big mulatto race? I know some of this was straight from the book, but I wish the movie tried to make things more clear.

The 1960 version is better, though there are some things about this version I like better, like humans turning into a mixed race, rather than everyone being completely white with blonde hair.

It didn't bother me that they didn't have historical records or cultural memories going back 800,000 years because, well, neither do we. But what did bug me was the idea that someone could learn to correctly pronounce a language without ever hearing it spoken and with no instruction whatsoever.

The Brood (1979)
dir: David Cronenberg

I was dead excited to see this as I've been filling in the gaps on Cronenberg recently, he's the thinking man's horror director.
I had no idea what this movie was about going in and I'm not going to give it away - but it deals with child abuse, parenthood and suppressed emotions all wrapped in a suspenseful, grotesque little package... So them's the themes. It's wonderfully acted (unlike Cronenberg's previous film Scanners) and like Videodrome I think it's dated very well, the budget restrictions aren't too apparent and D.C's infamous effects are consistently great - they would never invoke the same morbid fascination from me if they were rendered in modern CGI. His imagination never ceases to amaze me!

And er... this was another Youtube viewing I'm afraid. But honestly the quality wasn't bad compared to some of the stuff you'll dust off in the darkest recesses of the intarwub... Sharp as you'll find and the sound was great, not bad for £0.00

Well I think she was taught how to speak it from Orlando Jone's character, who's like a computer hologram.
