Abstract 03-01-2012 07:13 PM

Just recently watched the HBO Docudrama "Too Big To Fail." Was excellent.

I finally got around to watching Sokurov's Russian Ark, it's quite the feat. It had the flow of classic Russian literature and the avant-garde filming techniques of sir Andrey Tarkovsky, both things that I adore. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys more cerebral films. 10/10

This is still on my HD to watch. Can't wait to see it but I want to be in the right frame of mind to appreciate it fully.

For me, it was one of those films that I'm hitting myself for not watching it sooner, because it was such a gem that I could watch on almost any day. I need to get deeper into Russian film, for all I've seen is a few Tarkovsky films, Russian Ark, and The Island. If other Russian films are half as good as these mentioned, then I'll still have a Hell of a ride watching them.

I know this isn't supposed to be serious but neither Planet Terror or Machete was supposed to be serious and they were good movies. This was not. Way too campy and if I do say so myself distasteful. The acting was also atrocious. If you feel like watching a bad gore fest then this is your movie, but don't think it's going to be good.

One of the pinnacles of early sci-fi. Has that classic quality that transcends any bad acting, horrible effects, and cheesy dialogue. I enjoyed watching it.

Had some very cheesy moments but overall it was a good comic book movie. I saw the preview for this like 15 years ago on the VHS version of Dumb and Dumber and I've been waiting to see it ever since. Great sci-fi movie of the 90s.

Not bad. I expected a bit more but Johnny Depp was good in it like always and I enjoyed the action sequences.

About Hobo With a Shotgun - pretty much goriest movie I've seen in ages if not ever. I didn't find it distasteful really, but uncomfortable. Acting ... it's meant to be 'bad', it's meant to be 'campy'. It's not meant to be taken serious at all, but it does have a little bit of a lesson to teach (don't mess with the homeless dude with the shotgun? :D No but really, there's a lesson under that gore somewhere). If I were that homeless dude, I woulda got back on a train and got out of there as soon as Ricky's head came off. Heh, I only checked out the movie because someone said Ricky was in it (of Trailer Park Boys - Rob Wells?) but he wasn't even a main character! Dammit.

Agreed with your Once Upon a Time in Mexico thoughts.

Not everyone can enjoy a movie like Hobo With A Shotgun. I mean, when I saw the trailer, I instantly got the impression it paid homage to the excessively violent and often silly exploitation movies in the vein of guys like Lloyd Kaufman .. which are definetly not for the average viewer.

I think it was good by the way!

edit :

If it failed as a homage, it only failed by being too good :p: Too high production value, too good acting etc.

That's what I thought too, it reminded me old '80's actin movies like The Exterminator, The Toxic Avenger, Vigilante, and Street Trash. Basically the low budget high violence exploitation action movies of the 1980's that depict urban blight and decay and try to have some kind of message attached. I think too many people went into Hobo With a Shotgun expecting it to just borrow the aesthetic of those movies, not to actually try and mimic it.

I'm not into the ultraviolence typically, but it was a fun romp in Helltown. Poor Rob Wells lost his head too soon though. I wish he'd been a major character, but someone needed to set up the idea of how dire things were.

The word ultraviolence should only be used when referencing Clockwork Orange.
