I must confess, I have all six of the Ron Fricke filmography but have yet to venture beyond Koyaanisqatsi.

My free time is so heavily focused on research and projects that I seldom make the time for a zen-like film experience.

I'll have to remedy that.

I just rewatched David Cronenberg's A History Of Violence and I liked it a lot more than I did years ago. It was a really smart decision to make the short bursts of violence so brutal that it separates the movie from your usual thriller. Instead of thinking "yeah, go get those badguys" when Viggo Mortensen kills some gangsters, you kind of go "yeah, go get those motherf- oh god... oh no what did you do..." *holds hand before mouth in shock*

It really gets across how violence is not fun and cosequence free the way it is portrayed in most movies. Violence is shocking, traumatizing and it takes a certain kind of person to be so brutal in the real world.

The final scene in the movie where Viggo simply walks into the kitchen and slowly, hesitantly sits down with his family at the dinner table just before the credits roll is incredibly powerful. Nobody says a word, nothing really happens - its all in the eyes and in everything that led up to that point in the movie.

I have to admit I got a bit choked up.

That scene slays me every time.

People were talking about this movie a lot recently because it came out with a trailer that was exceptionally creepy. However anyone intrigued by that should expect the actual movie to be nothing like the trailer.

It was certainly creepy but not the unnerving scare fest that the trailer paints it as. I wouldn't even really call this a horror film, but moreso like a drama/thriller with some seriously twisted **** at the end. It's a beautifully shot film but drags way too long without much payoff, and the plot twist at the end was painfully obvious from the opening minutes (maybe intentional?). Overall I was pretty disappointed but I guess my hopes were too high based on the trailer. It's a solid movie though and I don't regret watching it.

I recently heard about something called fred dies in the end(?), from what the person explained to me it sounded really cool. Thoughts?

John Dies at the End was pretty entertaining and funny. A lot of people are overselling it imo though.
